Guest guest
Has anyone tried herbal remedies for Bi-polor disorder with success? My husband is taking St.John's Wort, GABA, cq10,and Omega Oils. It's better than nothing but I don't think I've perfected it yet. My son also has bi-polar disorder, he is 8. I'm not sure at what level of does that I can give him. Any help would be appreciated! Carrie
Guest guest
Hi Carrie, I don't have personal experience with any bipolar treatments, but I would also suggest looking at the diet. Make sure it's organic with lots of raw fruits and veggies, especially for your son as sugar and artificial flavors/colors can be especially hard on the younger ones. Total Nutrition would also be a very good thing to keep in every day. In regards to dose, look at the 150 rule in the files. Essentially, give your son the % dosage that his weight is a percentage of 150 lbs. (For example, if he weights 75 lbs, half dose, etc.) Hope this helps. Carrie that is a nice mix. i'd use premier cod liver oil (www.greenpastures.org) for the omegas and the EFAs, and double the dosage until he stabilizes. also you should go gluten free - there's a very high incidence of gluten intolerance and mental disorders. i would do the same for your son. also make sure that the sjw you're taking is real, not an over the counter supplement/pill - the quality on those is unreliable. finally, i'd switch whichever coQ10 you're taking to dr. ron schmidt's - he doesn't put in any additives, which makes it much more absorbable. www.drrons.com -katja
Guest guest
The only nutrient ever studied for Bi-polar is omega-3 from fish oil. It is most likely the DHA from the fish oil that is doing something to the brain chemistry. Do not use Flax seed oil. It does not have any DHA. A recent study also showed that flax seed oil is not converted to EPA as readily as Fish oil. Do not use cod liver oil. It has too much Vitamin A and D for an eight year old. Nature's Way has put out a new enteric coated fish oil that does not disolve in the stomach. Hope This Helps James
Guest guest
i agree with you on the flax seed oil part, but everything else you have said i strongly oppose. there are plenty of nutrient-based other studies, some in regard to gluten specifically, and b complex. check pubmed. and you don't have to worry about the a and d vitamins - the levels the gov't sets are far too low and our food doesn't give us nearly enough anyway. we regularly take 30,000 units of vitamin a and get buckets of vitamin d too. (if you're panicky, then at least do take the fish oil so you get the efa/dha) i guess that means the bi-polar questioner will have to decide for herself. -katja At 05:31 PM 8/31/2004, you wrote: >The only nutrient ever studied for Bi-polar is omega-3 from fish >oil. Guest guest
I googled BPD and gluten. It was an interesting exercise. What I found is this. Younger people respond better to a gluten free diet than older people. Not everyone that has BPD is gluten intolerant. Test need to be done to verify if the person is in fact gluten intolerant. Another interesting find is that 25-50% of people with BPD are also suffer from hypothyroidism. If anyone likes, I have the links to the sites I found and would be happy to share them. Send me an email and let me know. James
