Scientists have discovered a potential link between deodorants and breast cancer.

High levels of aluminium, which makes up 90 per cent of the anti-perspirant part of most products, were found in the breast tissue of cancer patients who had undergone mastectomies.

The element has been linked to the disease by earlier studies.

Scientists have previously warned that aluminium could be absorbed through the skin, particularly after the armpits are shaved.

Once in the body, it may mimic the hormone oestrogen, which is known to be involved in the development and progression of breast cancer.

Researchers found "significantly higher" levels of aluminium in the underarm region of the breast than other areas in 17 patients.

But scientists said they had been unable to prove a direct link between the presence of the extra aluminium and the use of anti-perspirants. The element may have come from other sources, they said.

Rather than triggering the cancer, researchers suggested it could be attracted to the tumour, which may act as a "sink" for the metal. Dr Chris Exley, from Keele University, Staffs, carried out the tests on tissue from women who had mastectomies at Wythenshawe Hospital, Manchester.

"You could make a leap of faith that the two could be linked," he said.

"It is only on 17 individuals, but the data we have showing a higher distribution of aluminium in the underarm is statistically significant.

"It could not have happened by chance."

Breast cancer, which is the most common cancer in Britain, causes more than 12,500 deaths each year and is the leading cause of death among women aged 35 to 54.

Dr Exley's report, published in the Journal of Inorganic Biochemistry, says: "Higher content of aluminium in the outer breast might be explained by this region's closer proximity to the underarm where the highest density of application of anti-perspirant could be assumed."

His report goes on to say that aluminium in breast tissue "might contribute" to breast cancer.

However, the Breakthrough Breast Cancer charity said the study did not constitute reliable scientific evidence of a link between the use of anti-perspirants and breast cancer.

Dr Sarah Cant, senior policy and information officer, said: "Breast cancer is a complex disease and its causes are unknown for the majority of the 44,000 women diagnosed each year in the UK."

Dr Christopher Flower, director-general of the Cosmetic, Toiletry & Perfumery Association, which represents manufacturers, said: "I would say that this small study does not present any evidence at all of a link between breast cancer and the use of anti-perspirants containing aluminium.

"We do not believe that aluminium is absorbed into the body from the use of anti-perspirants." By Laura Clout
