Guest guest
Further info on vaccines & seizures. This is to advise those in the Angelman community that the 2008-9 information bulletin from CDC (viewable on ASF website) indicates that the live, intranasal flu formulation (LAIV) should not be given to individuals with a seizure disorder. Several parents of Angelman syndrome children have called this notice to our attention. It is also my understanding that the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) advises to avoid the intranasal vaccine in those with cognitive impairments that can interfere with breathing or swallowing function. This precaution is also applicable to many with Angelman syndrome. Accordingly it seems that, when a decision is made by the health practitioner and the parent to give the flu vaccine, the inactivated (TIV) flu vaccine should be administered (this recommendation applies for all individuals with Angelman syndrome, whether or not they have a seizure disorder).
