Guest guest
Hi everybody, I hv become member of yr grp and posting my problem with a request to heel me if u can About 3 years back I have an attack of nervous breakdown resulting in right side footdrop. At that time my MRI revealed Disc herniation at L3 L4 left side with likely impingenment upon the existing nerve roots. That time I felt excruciating pain in my back and both buttock and I couldn't stand up straight anymore. This went away after 2 days but then I felt pain down my right leg all the way down into my foot. The pain strated from buttocks and goes to right foot. I can walk on my heels and can tiptoe, but walking on my toes was more difficult with my right foot ie can walk but with decided limp. There was drop of foot but there was burning pain ,tingling ,numbness & inability to sense vibration. From that day I am taking physical therapy called electrical muscle stimulator / I.F.T. and hot dip waxing to maintain muscle tone of right foot. Since recovery is taking longer time I request your goodself as which type of Therapy is to be performed to evaluate nerve. As thru physiotherapy footdrop has been heeled and there is no drop of foot but presently there is heaviness / stiffness on my right foot Smile regards TEJ
Guest guest
Hi, Teji: Your foot drop sounds quite like my sciatica, which I've had for a decade now. The sciatic nerve starts at the spine in the lower back and travels down both legs to the toes. In Chinese, sciatica is called Zuo Gu Shen Jing Tong. Even after massage and acupuncture by different doctors and massage therapists, the pain still lingers and i have a dull sensation on the bottom of my left foot. In fact a doctor warned that I could lose use of the leg unless the problem is corrected. There are a wide variety of acupoints that could be used to treat sciatica, point selection should be made for your specific case by a knowledgeable acupuncturist. Cupping may also prove useful. Cupping on my Huan Tiao points brought out a lot of dark colored stuff. Part of my therapy was to expel the xie qi or negative qi out of the meridian. After acupuncture, the doctor would turn me over and release the negative qi out of the foot. If this isn't done, the foot swells from buildup of the negative qi. Try to find a good massage therapist, and use good massage oil. Even in China, finding a well-trained massage therapist who will get to the trouble spots is difficult. Money is not the object, often, its a matter of finding a therapist with good technique. If indeed you do have sciatica, there is an herbal remedy I've recently started taking. While it is too soon to make a final judgement, I feel sensations in the dull foot area twenty minutes after taking the remedy. My acupuncturist felt there was no need for herbs. My opinion is that all types of therapy can be used, even moxibustion. I've got chronic sciatica and welcome all possibilities. You may well need to find a Tui Na therapist who deals with spinal injuries. You mention a nervous breakdown. What have you done or are you doing about that? TCM has good methods for mental illnesses. Hope that helps, Jack --- teji <pedus165 wrote: > Hi everybody, > > I hv become member of yr grp and posting my problem > with a request > to heel me if u can > > About 3 years back I have an attack of nervous > breakdown resulting > in right side footdrop. You may well need to find a Tui Na > therapist who deals with spinal injuries. Or a regular massage therapist who understands how to relieve `piriformis syndrome'. The piriformis is a hip muscle that surrounds the sciatic nerve. When it becomes chronically tight, it puts pressure on the nerve, causing sciatica. Disc herniation may be coincidental and not the actual cause of your sciatica; many people have that condition without any other problems with their vertebrae or spine. sue

The sciatic nerve goes through the piriformis, a hip muscle; if the muscle is chronically tight, it will put pressure on the nerve, causing a great deal of pain in some cases. Even though Teji has disc herniation, that may be a coincidence, as many people with sciatica have no other problems with their discs or vertebrae. sue ________ DSL – Something to write home about. Guest guest
G'day TCMers, - an additional therapy Y'all might try is Structural Integration, aka Rolfing. -have endured sciatica [from falling off the roof-lleft eg caught in gutter, acted as a bungee cord] ], drop foot [from dropping not one, but Two cast iron frypans on rt foot]--> all cured. My tale Picture it: dozens of m/cycle mishaps [hit by cars, other bikes while track racing] with resulting closed head injuries [3 yrs of No recall], scars & hdaches, spasticity, hip pain, knees & ankles that wld 'give' or go lame at the drop of a hat. For 25 yrs! - ended up buying aspirin 500ct & horse liniment by the Gallon... - read dr Rolfs bk, but figured cldn't afford the treatmts until 5yrs later when it really got bad - turns out price wise cost is $100 here in Toronto, ont, canada & best of all unlike chiro etc the treatmt protocol calls for only 10 sessions! - figured there was no way Anything cld help me as the injuries had set for 25 yrs+, but had to do something - after the 1st appt tried to precipitate a hdache = no go! 'Hey, maybe this stuff has some efficacy... Affirmative' - what the rolfer does is use yr body as a sculpture, manipulating the fascia to restore the body's alignmt, having you get off the table every 10 min or so & walk up & dwn so he can eyeball his 'work in progress' -if You can find a Rolfer in Your area give it a go. What have You got to lose?? regards, dar dobs ps am a retired auto mechanic so the precepts of Rolfing make a helluva lot of sense. If it isn't aligned there is pain, premature wear/destruction of joints. Guest guest
Dar: Really good TCM massage therapists know how to do that, it does make sense. There's a school in Guangzhou and HK that trains how to do just that, much like rolfing. Over the course of months of acupuncture, my spine straightened to where I could stand erect for the first time in my life--had some sort of spine curvature since childhood. Even so, still haven't got the best of sciatica yet.
