Empty Heat (aka Deficiency Heat) is due to there not being enough Yin

to properly cool (and calm and moisten) the body. Full Heat (aka

Excess Heat) is due to the person being exposed to too much Heat. For

example, too many of the foods and/or herbs the person consumes have

a heating effect on the body. (They have Warm or Hot thermal

energy.) The weather is too hot. Etc.

Empty Cold (aka Deficiency Cold) is due to there not being enough

Yang to properly heat (and activate and dry) the body. Full Cold

(aka Excess Cold) is due to the person eating too many foods with a

cooling effect on the body, eating chilled food, being exposed to

cold weather outside or to artificial weather inside like sitting in

the draft of an air conditioner, etc.

There is a special kind of Qi called Protective Qi (aka Defensive Qi)

that circulates at the surface of the body and gives people

resistence to Pernicious Evils (Heat, Cold, Wind, Damp, Dryness) in

the environment. Sometimes the Pernicious Evil is so strong that it

overwhelms otherwise adequate Protective Qi. (Like extremely cold

weather or even a sudden drop in temperature.) Sometimes the

Protective Qi is temporarily weak because of things like a person

eating too many sweets at a party or staying up late too many nights

studying for exams or getting a business report ready. Sometimes the

person is chronically Protective Qi Deficient because the Spleen

and/or Lungs are weak and the person is Qi Deficient in general.

Blood Deficiency and Kidney Yang Deficiency also can play roles in a

person being susceptible to Pernicious Evils in the environment.
