Guest guest
Sorry to hear that you're having problems with the website Victoria.I know virtually nothing about computers so I won't be of too much help.Hopefully on Monday someone from can help you! victoria_dragon <victoria_dragon wrote: It's gotten even harder for me to read posts on the website and perform moderating duties than it was when I first posted about having problems. If anyone reading this has an idea what the problem may be and how to correct it, please email me privately in addition to posting on the list. Because I'm having such problems accessing posts and screens on the website, I'm not sure if any of my posts are going through or being answered. It's a little easier to get into my mail than to access the CH website. Going to mail for posts won't work in my case because I have to get on the site for certain moderating duties. I have appealed repeatedly to for help solving this problem, and so far nothing. If this problem continues I will be forced to move the CH list to a list server that will allow me to get on the website. I am willing to consider list-servers based in other countries besides the US. Need a quick answer? Get one in minutes from people who know. Ask your question on Answers. Guest guest
I was going to reply to your post the other day when you said something about it, but after I read some of the other posts I must have spaced it =P. Anyways I have had this problem before. I've got a few tips that might help. Is all of your internet slow, or just ? If I read right, you were saying just ? For the first thing (I assume you are using IE, hopefully 6 or earlier because I haven't installed 7 yet, and it is much different), click on tools up by file and edit in IE then go down to internet options. Click on delete cookies delete files in the temporary internet files section. Then clear history in the history section. What this does is clear out the IE cache and it may take some time after you click the button. The longer it takes, the more stuff you have in there, and the better chance it has of fixing the problem. If you've already done it go ahead and do it again. The next step is in the same window. Click the settings button in the temporary internet files box. This will open up a new window called settings. Make sure the radio button is on automatically (if you are still having problems after all of this you could try some of the other buttons). Look at the amount of disk space you are using. IE assigns a ridiculous amount if you've got a decent sized hard drive; usually 1 or 2 thousand megabytes (or 1 or 2 gigabytes). Change this value to 100 MB, that's about how much you need, and if you have more than that it will just slow your computer down. Hit ok on that window to saev the settings, and hit ok on the other window to save the settings. Close out all IE windows to save the settings. For the third thing you can try. I am assuming you are running windows xp (home or pro shouldn't matter). Click start then all programs then accessories then system tools then disk defragmenter. This will open up the windows defragmenter (it's a program that puts the info on your hd back in order. I equate it to having a messy desk and you can't find where anything is, or it takes you a long time to find it. If you organize it, it speeds up what you do at your desk. Likewise a defragmenter speeds up how your computer can pull up information). I don't know how many hd's or partitions you have, but repeat this step for everything that shows up in that list. Select the drive (the C: drive is what you want to do first, or whatever drive windows is installed on). Hit analyze. When the scan is done, hit view report. Scroll down in the first window (volume information), and find volume fragmentation. There should be 3 different percentages. Reply back to me and tell me what all of those percentages are. After that go ahead and hit close on that window. Look and see how much red you have in the graph, if you have a lot, then this should speed up your computer a lot. Make sure you close out most programs while this is running, and try not to do a lot of things on your computer while it is running because it might cause some corruption. Go ahead and hit defragment, and wait for it to complete. It will take some time to complete based on your computer and it's speed and configuration. Somewhere between 10min and 12 hours =P. Usually about 4 hours if you have never done it before and you have an average machine. Repeat this for all of the drives that show up in the disk defragmenter. Next you can try a scan disk to see if there are any errors on your computer. I'll try to explain this as best as I can. If it doesn't work, there are several ways to run this one. Open my computer, look for your c drive (or whatever windows is installed on), right click the drive icon, and select properties, it's at the bottom of the list(alternately you can just select the icon and press alt and enter at the same time). Go to the tools tab and select Check now. Select automatically fix file system errors. If your hard drive is more than 2 or 3 years old you can select scan for and attempt for recovery of bad sectors, but the second option takes a very long time (longer than the disk defragmenter). Then hit start. Repeat this for every hard drive or partition you have (the drives that showed up on the disk defragmenter. The next thing you can do is install adaware and spybot and run the tests. These are both free programs that remove spyware and malaware. If you want me to explain that further just write me back, but in simple they are machines that remove entries in your machine that can compromise your personal information, or slow your machine down. Spybot is available here <http://dw.com.com/redir?pid=10401314 & merid=104443 & mfgid=104443 & ltype=dl\ _dlnow & lop=btn & edId=3 & siteId=4 & oId=3120-8022_4-10401314 & ontId=8022_4 & des\ tUrl=http://www.download.com%2F3001-8022_4-10401314.html> or if that doesn't work try here <http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000-8022_4-10401314.html\ ?tag=lst-0-1> <http://www.download.com/Spybot-Search-Destroy/3000-8022_4-10401314.html\ ?tag=lst-0-1> Adaware is available here <http://dw.com.com/redir?pid=10399602 & merid=69274 & mfgid=69274 & ltype=dl_d\ lnow & lop=btn & edId=3 & siteId=4 & oId=3120-8022_4-10399602 & ontId=8022_4 & dlrs=\ 1 & destUrl=http://www.download.com%2F3001-8022_4-10399602.html> <http://dw.com.com/redir?pid=10399602 & merid=69274 & mfgid=69274 & ltype=dl_d\ lnow & lop=btn & edId=3 & siteId=4 & oId=3120-8022_4-10399602 & ontId=8022_4 & dlrs=\ 1 & destUrl=http://www.download.com%2F3001-8022_4-10399602.html> or if that doesn't work, try here <http://www.download.com/Ad-Aware-SE-Personal-Edition/3000-8022_4-103996\ 02.html?tag=lst-0-1> Go ahead and install the programs, run the updates, and start scanning the computer. When the tests are done select all of the entries (best if you right click a check box and hit select all), and then let the programs fix the problem. Try to run the two scans at different times as they can interfere with each other. Run the scans until you come up with a clean bill of health (meaning run the scans until it says congrats, no problems found, it might take 2 or 3 times each). Let me know if you have troubles and I'll try to guide you through it. The other thing you can do is run your antivirus, making sure to update the definition files first. If you don't have an antivirus, download AVG free here <http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5390/lng/us/tpl/v5#avg-anti-virus-free> That's a few things you can do to try to get it working again. If none of these work, send something back to me and tell me a few more details about how and when your problem started and what OS you are running and browser, internet connection, ect. Hope this helps =)
Guest guest
Well, yesterday, almost every entry I made to read mail responded with " bad url " or " unable to access url " response, so I finally just signed out. Today so far, so problems, but I am just reading mail from my account. has been having lots of technical problems lately, it seems to me. victoria_dragon <victoria_dragon wrote: It's gotten even harder for me to read posts on the website and perform moderating duties than it was when I first posted about having problems. Guest guest
Thank you so much. It took a while to DL, install, and check things out, but screens are now loading like they should. Thank you again. It's going to take a while to get caught up with messages on here. I'm going to requote those links you gave for the free anti-virus, spyware, and adware programs.
