There are 5 solid Organs (Liver, Heart, Spleen, Lungs, Kidneys) and the Pericadium. These are classified as Yin Organs. There are 6 hollow Organs (aka bowels) which are the Gall Bladder, Small Intestine, Triple Heater, Stomach, Large Intestine, and Urinary Bladder. These are classified as Yang Organs or " Bowels " . Each of the 12 Organs are associated with a meridian or channel which bears its name. The 12 are called the Major Meridians (Channels). There also is the 6-Stages of Cold-Induced Illnesses. When someone comes down with an infection, the course of the illness will follow a pattern. Say for example Wind Cold attacks the Exterior of the body (i.e., head, neck, shoulders, arms, legs, skin, muscles, meridians, and bones). From a modern perspective the Wind Cold triggers certain changes in the body which are favorable to bacteria and viruses multiplying and taking hold. Anyway, if the Wind Cold is not stopped and expelled, it will invade deeper and deeper into the body or lodge in an area. It will affect the most superficial meridians first. These are the Urinary Bladder and the Small Intestine, the " Tai Yang " or " Greater Yang " . For this reason the first stage of Cold-Induced Illnesses is called the Tai Yang or Greater Yang Stage. The next stage is the Shao Yang (Lesser Yang) Stage (Triple Burner and Gall Bladder), followed by the Yang Ming (Yang Bright) Stage (Large Intestine and Stomach), followed by Tai Yin (Greater Yin) (Lungs and Spleen). The final two are Shao Yin (Lesser Yin - Heart and Kidneys) and the Jue Yin (Absolute Yin - Pericardium and Liver). (Which is the 5th and which is the 6th will vary according to if you're talking about the meridians (deepest) or the stage (worst, most serious)). I'm actually talking about two different things here. One is the order in which the Wind Cold will move deeper into the body, going from the most superficial to the deeper meridians and finally into the Interior, and the other is the stages of certain illnesses. The two meridians which are the most superficial and will be affected first by an invasion of Wind Cold are the Bladder and Small Intestine. BUT if the illness is still confined to the meridians (the " Exterior " ) of the body, this is the Tai Yang Stage of illness regardless if the Evil has penetrated to the other 10 main meridians. What characterizes the Tai Yang Stage is that the Evil has not penetrated to the Inteior (i.e., Organs) of the body. It's still strictly in the meridians and the rest of the Exterior. The next stage is the Shao Yang Stage. In this stage the Evil has penetrated into the Organs. The Shao Yang Stage is characterized by the illness being partly in the Exterior and partly in the Interior. It's a more serious stage than the previous Tai Yang Stage. In the Yang Ming (Yang Bright) Stage, the Evil has left the Exterior and penetrated entirely into the Interior of the body. The remaining 3 stages (the Yin Stages) also are characterized by the Evil being entirely in the Interior. What is the appropriate treatment for one stage may not be the appropriate treatment for other stages. For example, the appropriate treatment for the Tai Yang and Shao Yang stages is to induce sweating. The Evil leaves the body via the pores. BUT, if the illness has reached the Yang Ming Stage, you do not want to induce sweating because that will make the person sicker. Besides, once the Yang Ming Stage is reached, the Evil is entirely in the Interior. One can only sweat the Evil out when it's entirley in the Exterior (Tai Yang Stage) or still partially in the Exterior (Shao Yang Stage). Once it's entirely in the Interior, other things are called for, and these will vary according to what stage the illness is in. One of the greatest changes in treatment comes from the Yang Ming (Yang Bright) Stage to the Tai Yin (Greater Yin) Stage as we'll see in a moment. Some readers may be wondering why learning to recognize the 6 Stages is important. Besides the fact that proper treatment varies for the different stages, if you've ever brewed an herbal tea from bulk herbs, you know that this is something that isn't done in a few minutes. You want to have the needed teas ready. Otherwise, by the time you get something brewed for the Shao Yang Stage, the client may have passed into the Yang Ming Stage, and what's appropriate for the Shao Yang Stage will make the person sicker in the Yang Ming Stage. (Sometimes teas (decoctions) work better than pills or powders or other forms of administration.) I've presented the 6 Stages like one always moves through them in a very clearcut manner. This isn't always so. Sometimes a person will appear to skip say the Shao Yang Stage and go straight from the Tai Yang Stage into the Yang Ming Stage. The progression is very rapid. Sometimes a person will go back and forth between two stages. Sometimes the person will become stuck in a certain stage. This happens a lot with the Shao Yang (Lesser Yang) Stage. The person is strong enough to keep the Evil from penetrating any deeper but not strong enough to expel it. Sometimes people will remain stuck in the Shao Yang Stage for years - long after the illness supposedly was cured by allopathic standards. Sometimes the Evil becomes trapped in the Interior, also causing problems long after the person supposedly was cured by allopathic standards. Sometimes treatment can trigger the progression into a more serious stage. This sometimes is seen in the progression from the Yang Ming (Yang Bright) Stage into the Tai Yin Stage. The first 3 stages - the Yang Stages - are characterized by fever and/or feelings of being hot. (The Shao Yang Stage is characterized by alternating fever and chills.) The Yin Stages are characterized by feeling cold. Many of the herbs used to treat the Yang Stages are herbs which have a cooling effect on the body. The illness can progress naturally from the Yang Ming (Yang Bright) Stage to the Tai Yin (Lesser Yin) Stage becasue the Yang becomes exhausted. But, a lot of times, too vigorous treatment with herbs that have a cooling effect on the body can trigger the progression. If allopathic drugs are used to treat an infection, the TCM properties of these drugs also have an effect. For example, antibiotics have a very cooling effect on the body. This cannot be stressed enough: Antibiotics kill bacteria, but they have no effect on expelling a Pernicious Evil (Cold, Wind, Heat, Dampness, Dryness, Fire) from the body. They also can actually create the Pernicious Evil Cold. You'll frequently run into the situation where the antibiotics have killed the harmful bacteria (and the beneficial ones as well) but the Perncioius Evil is still lodged in the body, continuing to create various health problems. The 6-Stages of Cold-Induced Illness is not applicable to all infectious illnesses. Later in its history as China began to have more and more contact with other countries, very serious illnesses began appearing that did not respond to the 6-Stages Model. In theory, if one's Protective Qi is strong enough and stays strong enough, one will never experience a 6-Stages illness. But these new illnesses were different. No matter how strong a person's Protective Qi was, these new illnesses could overwhelm it. So the Chinese came up with a new model called the 4 Levels of Virulent Heat Evils to treat these illnesses.
