Guest guest
Hi Richard. Welcome to Chinese Traditional Medicine. One or more of several TCM imbalances can underlie hypertension. You'll need to see a TCM healer to determine which are operating in your case. One of the things that most surprises many Westerners about TCM is that there is no one-to-one correspondence between TCM imbalances and allopathic-defined medical conditions. For example, one person with HBP may have an underlying Root of Liver-Kidney Yin Deficiency, another Blood Stasis Obstructing the Network Vessels, another Yin & Yang Dual Deficiency, and so on. What helps one person may do nothing for a second and could make a third sicker because the underlying TCM imbalances are different. Bob Flaws and Philippe Sionneau report in The Treatment of Modern Western Medical Diseases with that " Acupuncture is usually very effective for bringing down a high systolic pressure within 15-20 minutes of insertion of the needles. It is less effective for reducing an elevated diastolic pressure. " (p. 279.) They add that in cases of HBP acupuncture is more effective in treating Excess imbalances than in treating Deficiency imbalances. (p. 279.) (Excess imbalances are caused by there being too much of something - Phlegm, Blood Stasis, etc. Deficiency patterns are caused by there not being enough of something the body needs. For example, Yin Deficiency, Yang Deficiency, Qi Deficiency, etc. " Ear acupunmcture with intradermal needles left in place between regularly scheduled body acupuncture sessions may improve the therapeutic effect of acupuncture. It is also possible to use 'ion pellets' or radish seeds taped over the selected ear points which the patient stimulates several times per day with finger pressure. " (p. 279.) According to Flaws and Sionneau, HBP is one of those conditions that as a general rule responds best to a combination of allopathic medicine and TCM. They instruct TCM healers to " do a pattern discrimination of the patient's signs and symptoms WHILE ON THEIR WESTERN DRUGS and proceed accordingly. " (p. 279.) (A " pattern discrimination " means determining what TCM imbalances are present.) Flaws and Sionneau mention " Onion and garlic can both prevent and lower hypertension. " (p. 279.) They mention chrysanthemum flower, celery, and shepherd's purse as being good foods and herbs for people with an underlying TCM pattern of Liver Fire Flaming Upward or Yin Deficiency- Yang Hyperactivity (Liver Yang Rising). (p. 279.)

P.Hypertension can lower it smoothly, while Groove makes it fall too quikly(causing hypotension) with a rebound of increase of blood pressure afterwards. This doesn't treat the cause, which is desirable, just the symptom. The cause continues to operate, and may 'pop up' in another form eventually. I want to emphasize this not only for the beginning TCM students on the list but also for the list members who are new to TCM. It's true of any untreated TCM imbalance and the many ways an imbalance can manifest. It's why the emphasis in TCM is on identifying and treating Roots (underlying imbalances) instead of merely treating symptoms. If you treat the symptoms but not the Root, the Root is going to manifest in other ways. It still exists. Not only that, as time goes by, untreated Roots tend to get worse and to manifest in more and more ways - " key " symptoms as well as other possible symptoms. Students, one of the things you'll learn in clinic is that people very rarely will have every possible symptom of a particular imbalance. As a general rule, the more symptoms that are present and the more severe the symptoms, the more severe the imbalance and the longer it's gone untreated. Something else for beginning students to keep in mind is that in time, one imbalance can trigger another. For example, untreated Internal Cold will trigger Blood Stasis. Cold is one of the things that will work against the proper flow of Blood. Treatment will vary according to etiology. For example, in a case where Cold has been a factor in the Blood Stasis, Herbs That Move Blood alone are not going to be enough. The Internal Cold also will need to be treated. In these cases, the Blood Stasis imbalance is a " Branch " and the Internal Cold is the Root. (A good TCM Materia Medica (list of healing substances) will give suggestions on other herbs to add to a formula if such and such symptoms or imbalances also are present.) Advanced TCM: Beginning students, it can be very helpful to keep in mind that TCM recognizes that one Pernicious Evil (Cold, Heat, Wind, Dryness, Dampness, Fire) can change into another. One of the first examples you'll learn is how a cold due to Wind Cold Invasion (or Wind Heat Invasion) can transform into the Fire of pneumonia if the Wind Cold (or Wind Heat) becomes trapped.
