Hi Atillio,

As I understand it, Pycnogenol is the original trade name for what has come

to be called generically proanthocyanidin. It was at first extracted from

the French Maritime Pine tree, and subsequently from grape seed, so now you

sometimes see it listed as grape seed extract. I've been told the extraction

from grape seed is more enviro-friendly, i think due to the processing

involved.

In addition to being an antioxidant, like other bioflavonoids(the class of

nutrients it belongs to), it is said to be able to stabilize mast cells,

thus minimizing the output of histamine produced there and aborting the

cascade of allergic reaction. I use it in my practice as first line in

dealing with allergies, 150 mg/d. Many have told me that soon after

initiating this dosage they experienced the best allergy season in years. No

side effects. It is quite amazing for those who respond to it.

I use proanthocyanidin in tablet form. Metagenics (1-800-METAVIT -as a

practitioner you can order from them direct, as well as authorize drop

shipments to patients) has a product called Proantho-C, which contains 250

mg. of their buffered form of C, plus 25 mg proanthocyanidin per tablet. I

trust their potencies.

There are plenty of other brands available. Most health food/vitamin stores

would probably have several. ITM(Institute for Traditional Medicine, Subhuti

Dharmananda) has a product that contains it called Quercenol which contains

62mg per tablet, plus also Vit. E, C, Selenium, Zinc, Silymarin,

Quercetin(another bioflavonoid with similar anti-allergy effect), Tea

Polyphenols, Carotenoid complex and Lycopene. I sometimes take that. It's

in their 'White Tiger' line. SD developed it as an antioxidant mixture to

deal w/ complications of diabetes, liver inflammation and anti-aging,

according to his " Bag of Pearls " , the 400-page guide for their products.

In general, proanthocyanidin is not too hard to find. Look for it by that

name. 'Pycnogenol' is sometimes used in articles about it; the name remains

b/c it is the first name by which it was known, but i think

'proanthocyanidin' is the current standard.

Let me know if you try it and like it.
