hello one and all,

I recently posted a ml wherein I stated the the new

leading cause of death in the USA was doctoring. I quoted no source

and I was accused of making it up and/or exaggerating. I read it in

some relatively mainstream media but could not remember exactly where.

I have looked fairly thoroughly thru all my bumf and could not find

it, but I have turned up in the latest edition of The Ecologist

magazine the followin story:

Medicine is the US's biggest killer

More americans die at the hands of their doctors than in any other

way, according to a study by the Nutrition Institute of America.

Analysis of 994 US hospitals showed that there were 783,936 deaths

caused by medical drugs, surgery or wrong medical procedures in 2001.

Over the same period, there were 699,697 deaths caused by heart

disease and 553,251 deaths from cancer.

This is not the story I read but it is too similar to what I read so I

imagine my reading referenced the same source.

Also I found in the latest Nexus magazine a reference to

www.attadalechiropractic.com.au, a site I can't access (tho it is

there) for some reason. This site apparantly states " ...It is now

evident that the American medical system is the leading cause of death

and injury in the US... " from a US study. Perhaps someone can access

this site and verify the info.

Some one of the several who challenged my ml pointed out that doctors

see more seriously sick/ill ppl then we in alt. med. do. I would reply

that some/many/praps even all of those very sick ppl are very sick

because they've seen doctors - MRSA comes to mind, ppl on statins

come to mind (latest info is that whilst the statins appear to ensure

that you don't die from heart disease you will most definately die

sooner from a liver disorder - from a recent WDDTY magazine) women who

went on the the pill before age 21 have a majorly increased chance of

developing breast cancer, comes to mind too, und so weiter..

This may or may not be true, so let's look at a few things:

1) it is obvious that this stat is floating around and people are

jumping on the bandwagon and writing articles.

2) Unless the ecologist did the research it is just regurgitating a

possible wrong statistic!\ We need to see the original source to

evaluate it, because too many people have just passed around the stat

at this point

3) When we did Medline searches etc (previous )for the stat we found

it to be wrong.

4) All the articles to date that have stated this stat have not

supplied a valid source

So once again, call it skeptic or whatever, I don't believe it until I

see it. Please someone who has the article could you pull the source

and let's check it out.. Hell I am the first one to embrace this stat

if it is true, but let us once again be careful…

After all the talk on this forum about MSUing and not quoting things

accurately, I am a bit taken aback that you have misquoted WDDTY regarding

statins. WDDTY did not say that " statins appear to ensure you don't die

from heart disease " , but they did theorise that statins were a cause of

chronic heart failure possibly due to reduction in Coenzyme Q10. They did

say that statin use " could be associated with an increase in mortality of 1%

in 10 years " . I can't see where they said that " you will most definitely

die sooner from a liver disorder " .

I do agree with you that prescribed drugs are a major cause of illness and

see cases in my practice all the time, but we have to take the time to quote

reliably in order to maintain credibility and because its good practice!

Hi Stephen,

Just jumping on a band wagon for a minute.

There is a TV commercial out now for an RA medication. During the reciting of

the 'side-effects' near the end of the commercial they actually stated the

terminology: 'fatal events may occur'. Are they hoping that most laymans would

not equate this to death?

I really do not mean to kick a dead horse, but I think this is bad!

Right on. I'm sick of the alterative medicine internet virus, which spreads

errata in people's minds quicker than you can say " vaccine " or " canola " .

Let's see the actual source. The Ecologist may be right, but. maybe not.

You should read the literature on psychiatric

medicines!!!

Some of the disclaimers are ASTOUNDING!!!

One reads: " sudden death has followed ingestion of

this drug, yet NO CAUSAL CONNECTION HAS BEEN FOUND! "

If THAT is not a large mouthful of Orwellian

double-speak, I don't know what is!!!!

I've always thought that these massive, unwieldy

disclaimers would actually HELP alt. med. in general

just due to the horrors they ask the user to " beware. "

I'm on the bandwagon, also.....

I am sorry, I have to once again say something... We have come full

circle around to the 1st reference cited (which was bogus).. This

nutritioninstitureofUSA points to the death by medicine article. This

just goes to show how easy it is (and prevalant) passing around

(bogus) stats are... but thanx for the Ecologist source, it proves an

important point!

quick followup, from Reuters via :

Report Says 195,000 Deaths Due to Hospital Error

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - As many as 195,000 people a year could be dying in U.S.

hospitals because of easily prevented errors, a company said on Tuesday in an

estimate that doubles previous figures.

Lakewood, Colorado-based HealthGrades Inc. said its data covers all 50 states

and is

more up-to-date than a 1999 study from the Institute of Medicine that said

98,000

people a year die from medical errors.

" The HealthGrades study shows that the IOM report may have underestimated the

number of deaths due to medical errors, and, moreover, that there is little

evidence

that patient safety has improved in the last five years, " said Dr. Samantha

Collier, vice

president of medical affairs at the company.

The company, which rates hospitals based on a variety of criteria and provides

information to insurers and health plans, said its researchers looked at three

years of

Medicare data in all 50 states and Washington, D.C.

" This Medicare population represented approximately 45 percent of all hospital

admissions (excluding obstetric patients) in the U.S. from 2000 to 2002, " the

company said in a statement.

HealthGrades included as mistakes failure to rescue dying patients and the death

of

low-risk patients from infections -- neither of which the Institute of Medicine

report

included.

It said it found about 1.14 million " patient-safety incidents " occurred among

the 37

million hospitalizations.

" Of the total 323,993 deaths among Medicare patients in those years who

developed

one or more patient-safety incidents, 263,864, or 81 percent, of these deaths

were

directly attributable to the incidents, " it added.

" One in every four Medicare patients who were hospitalized from 2000 to 2002 and

experienced a patient-safety incident died. "

The U.S. government said it is trying to spearhead a move to get hospitals and

clinics

to use electronic databases and prescribing methods. The Institute of Medicine

report

said many deaths were due to medication prescribing errors or to errors in

delivering

medications.

" If the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's annual list of leading

causes of

death included medical errors, it would show up as number six, ahead of

diabetes,

pneumonia, Alzheimer's disease and renal disease, " Collier said.
