Just check with the manufacturers and suppliers and they will confirm that the move is on to stop selling firstly to anyone without a license and then ultimately NOT to sell to a Chiropractor or Acupuncturist. Yes it is a battle, this why I give all my patients the below information. You might be supprised how fast patients start telling MD's " No thank you, I'll go to my herbal doctor. JUST SAY NO TO DRUGS! This catchy phrase from the federal anti-drug movement of the Reagan era is still very relevant to the medical consumer of today. The increasing popularity of alternative or natural medicine is partly based on the public’s awareness of the limitations and dangers of pharmaceutical drugs. Hundred’s of thousands of adverse effects, including deaths and hospitalizations, are directly attributable to pharmaceutical drugs. Properly researched, regulated, prescribed and properly used drugs are the fourth most common cause of death – but they are never reported. (Source, Journal of the American Medical Association). Therapeutic drug use (not illicit drug use) each year; Kills as many as 198,815 people, puts 8.8 million people in hospitals, accounts for 28% of all hospital admissions, and costs as much as $182 billion dollars (American Medical News. Jan 15, 1996, p.11 ) The media goes crazy over reports of side effects from ephedra, tryptophan, and vitamin A, but nowhere do we read about the deaths and illnesses people suffer because of prescribed drugs. Greater than 26,000 times more people die from preventable medical misadventure and properly regulated, properly prescribed and properly used drugs than from dietary supplements. Granting the fact that under certain circumstances drugs can be life saving and must be used, let me just recap the four main reasons why you should say no to pharmaceuticals as much as possible. Except in instances of overwhelming bacterial infection, no drug works to eliminate the cause of the disease. Drugs are only palliative treatments which suppress the manifestations of a disease without altering its fundamental course. They work by temporarily manipulating human physiology for the sake of symptom relief. Drugs are extremely costly. As a general rule today each drug that a patient must take will cost approximately $100 per month unless there is some insurance coverage. The elderly are especially vulnerable since many of them are on fixed incomes, and they often end up with multiple prescriptions. The habitual price gouging of American pharmaceutical companies is unconscionable. Drugs are a dangerous double edged sword. Although they may relieve symptoms, they all have a significant chance of causing side effects. The risk of adverse interactions increases exponentially as the number of drugs taken increases. For example, the elderly in nursing homes may be taking more than ten different prescription medications. Surprisingly, it is NOT routine procedure to punch the list into a drug interaction database, so every day these patients are vulnerable and in fact succumb to serious drug-drug interactions. Consider the benefits of a natural medicine approach whenever possible. Carl Pfieffer, PhD said that for every pharmaceutical agent there was a natural substance which had similar effects with a lower probability of harm. Properly prescribed natural agents when used in a science based medical practice like Caring Medical, often get closer to correcting the root cause of many diseases and they are safe. Dietary supplements have averaged less than 5 confirmed deaths per year over the past 25 years in the USA, and most of those relate to a single batch of genetically engineered tryptophan introduced in the late 1980’s. (Source, CDC/FDA) America has been sold a bill of goods. The pharmaceutical industry in cooperation with the Federal government and the FDA have succeeded in creating a near monopoly over innovative medical problem solving in this country in order to enhance and secure corporate profits. Physicians and consumers breathlessly await the newest “generation†of pharmaceuticals, as the nation ’s overall health and vitality continue to spiral downhill, and society buckles under the exhorbitant costs. Drugs don’t solve most medical problems, they are dangerous, costly, and there are excellent alternative treatments available, many of which are safe, effective, and inexpensive. Get off the merry-go-round. Just say no to drugs.
