Guest guest
Hi, I know, I know, more questions! But first, Kathleen, hope Hunny Bunny is well and Chris, hope that you are! Too many down for the count! Anyway, I searched the archives for this b/c I thought there might have been some info, but I couldn't find anything. What are some things you all use for emulsifying agents in lotions and body butters? I'd like the most natural things as possible (of course!) but I can't seem to find anything that doesn't sound like a chemical. Also, do you emulsify lotions and body butters differently? Thanks, Debbie deb http://www.bodyhealthcenter.com
Guest guest
Hi Debbie, There are lots of things to use. Beeswax, soywax, stearic acid & lecithin would be the natural ones. Glycerol Monostearate is supposed to be natural too since it is a mix of stearic acid and glycerin, but you have to mix in another emulsifier to make it work (xanthan gum). Lotions, creams, body butters etc.. emulsify the same if there is water in the recipe. A butter bar/lotion bar wouldn't qualify. If you choose to use beeswax for your emulsifier/thickener you'll likely need to have an oil heavy formula and use a bit of borax to help it. You can add a bit of lecithin too. Stearic acid works okay but it will make your lotion thick, and kinda stiff. Adding xanthan gum would help it out. I use vegetable based emulsifying wax (4%) in some of my lotions, body butter etc because I like a light oil blend and it gives the creams a smoother texture. There are a lot of different types out there so you'd have to ask your supplier about what theirs is. The one I use is polysorbate 60 (derived from sugar cane) and cetearyl alcohol (a mix of fatty alcohols). Hope it was helpful Margaret > " Debra McDuffee " <deb > > > emulsifiers for lotions >Tue, 9 Apr 2002 18:10:57 -0400 > >Hi, >I know, I know, more questions!
