Hello all,

I went to a Gehlar Nutrition Lecture last month about using herbal medicine

wisely. It was at our local hospital. I have wanted to put something

together with some websites to share and " sound " really informative but

never seem to get there. I have started to check out these sites and they

seem very interesting. Some require subscriptions to get the full benefit.

I have no training in herbal use, but am always willing to learn and am very

interested in using alternative medicine for myself and my children but am

kinda scared.

Anyway hopefully some of this info will be new to some of you and you will

find it useful. I have learned so much from all of you and would like to

give something back.

Some interesting facts about herbs and what I learned at this lecture:

Sales of herbal supplements are up 400% since 1990

$4 billion spent last year on herbal medicine(more than traditional meds)

60 million people using supplements

Pharmacy growth: herbal supplement was largest area of growth

45% of seniors use herbal supplements

40-72% of patients do not tell their doctor about their use of supplements.

How used:

As preventative=41%

As treatment for illness=23%

Both=36%

6 of the top 20 pharmaceuticals are plant based.

75% of the 20 have indirect plant origins.

Where people are getting their info:

28% books

24% family

20% friends

18% internet, tv or radio

10% other (he asked, " where is doctor in this? " )

Reported and interesting study on liver toxicity and the use of Kava. Look

at http://www.consumerlab.com under their recalls & warnings section.

The doctor lecturing was Robert Alan Bonakdar MD, who is a clinical and

research fellow at Scripps Center for Integrative Medicine. He is building

a website that shows which herbs interact with which medications.

http://www.herbmed.net

He said the " Mother of all sites is " http://www.healthfinder.gov

Some more sites to check out:

http://www.naturaldatabase.com

http://www.tnp.com

I asked afterward if their were any studies on Oregano hydrosol or oregano

in general and he said that there were. (Butch has " peeked " my interest for

sure) I haven't found it yet but will keep trying as time allows.

Have a great day!

Margaret
