Guest guest
I never did respond to Butch's posts on ANZAC, though I did intent do ..... anyway, dunno if it's made the news over there or not, but the last of our ANZACs, Alek Campbell, died last night at 103 years old.... apparently he was the last person anywhere who was in that campaign. The photograph of him in the papers shows a babyfaced 16 year old - my heart goes out to these children who fight our wars for us. Rest in Peace, Alek, and thankyou. My Grandfather may well have fought along side him at Gallipoli. Grandpa and his best mate were just starting their medical studies when the call to arms came, and they lied about their age to enlist. When their commander found out that they were not only underage, but also med students, he sent them to Egypt to go home on the next voyage out, as he said they were needed more as doctors than soldiers. The camp they stayed in outside Cairo, Ma'adi, must have made a big impression on Grandpa, as he named his firstborn (my Mum) after it. Just some early morning musings ....
