Guest guest
<< Getting back to the homemade extract, being made with Everclear will give a stronger punch, that's why I don't recommend it to the little one's. >> Wondering if the " punch " is from the alcohol, or if being made with Everclear the extract contains more herbal strength. If the writer of the above would let me know, I'll appreciate it. Anyway, anytime the alcohol is an issue, just put however much of an extract you want to use presently in a stainless steel measuring spoon or a small dish where it cannot spill, until the alcohol evaporates. You can heat it gently if you want it right away. Then add a few drops of water to the essence of the extract that is now dried on the bottom of the spoon or dish, and go ahead and use it. I do this both for myself and for my cats. They really do NOT like alcohol! But most extracts with the alcohol removed, given in warm water with a pipette, they do not mind. I use warm water and a plastic pipette like the kind you use for EOs. The warm water is important. They don't seem to react much to that, as they do to cold water. I give them a " chaser " of straight water, then, in case they didn't like the taste. Shivani

If you are making a dry tincture- you would need to add water to the herb to rehydrate, then add everclear- or just add water/ alc. together.(or vodka) I recommend evaporating the alcohol from tinctures before taking them- set in warm water for a few minutes...not too hot... Guest guest
Hi Michelle, I've never heard or read on trying to rehydrate herbs once dried. Where did you get that info? I don't know of any herb that will rehydrate when dried. Also alc won't extract *all* herbals properties. Different menstrumms extract different constituents. Here's a link for you to use/look at. http://earthnotes.tripod.com/basics.htm#solvents Janine www.HerbaTherapy.com Seabuckthorn seed oil on SALE! Guest guest
(Being made with Everclear will give a stronger punch, that's why I don't recommend it to the little one's.) And yes by putting it in a spoon with water and letting it sit for a while works for the animal, but because the dosage for the little ones is a little more tricky. If your extract is factory made, generally the alcohol content is less and it's made with both alcohol and water. Where a homemade extract made with Everclear is 100% 190 proof alcohol. I have never given my animal a homemade extract, but instead readily give them a strong tea over the coarse of the day for the length of their sickness. Tea's are better for animals then extracts in my opinion and safer.
Guest guest
Janine Well, if you are going to extract from dry herb, you need some water! All of Michael Moores formulas add water (or have a lower percentage of alcohol in the menstruum) for dry herb. I have studied with two of MMs grads...I have learned his methods for extraction... and, yes- you wouldnt want to extract, say, nettle with alcohol- much better as a tea or a vinegar... But 190 proof is the best for tincturing fresh herb- try a vodka St Johns Wort and then try a 190 proof one- what a difference! If tinctures are made *properly* they do pack more punch- of herb- so the doses are lower... Michelle
Guest guest
Dear Michelle, Yes, Michael M's. recipes do ADD water, but don't 'necessarily start' out with water added. Some do, some don't. The point I am trying to make, is that 'properly' depends on the herb. There are as many different ways to extract as there are, say, daisies. Moore seems to have a definite way, that he publishes on line. The water added in most of Moore's recipes is usually no more than 25%. Many of us have studied under someone, whether or not they have as high a profile as Moore doesn't make them any less knowledgeable. I hear that North American tinctures are stronger than the British. I haven't heard anything about the Germans that I can remember. Janine Phariss www.HerbaTherapy.com Seabuckthorn seed oil on SALE! Guest guest
I've never added water to dried herbs to get the Everclear to work before. This includes dried roots and dried whole plants. Dried leave give the same dark green color as fresh leaves do, using everclear. > Well, if you are going to extract from dry herb, you need some water! Guest guest
You need to rehydrate the plant- everclear work by pulling the water and plant material out- I dont mean much water- I do my dry tinctures with 75% alcohol(diluted 190 proof) Check out Michael Moores site- http://www.swsbm.com/HOMEPAGE/HomePage.html > I've never added water to dried herbs to get the Everclear to work before. > This includes dried roots and dried whole plants.
