Nightmare of Morgellons disease Video The symptoms are real, but doctors refuse to accept it as a real disease. Morgellons is a skin disorder, people who have it describe it as a non-stop nightmare, and most doctors haven't even heard of Morgellon's. Fox 16's Jennifer Akers Reports. " It feels like bugs, ants, gnats, are crawling on my face, it's bad, " said Tina Willis. What sounds like a horrible nightmare is reality for Tina Willis of Little Rock. She believes she contracted Morgellons Disease after inhaling fumes at a factory eight years ago. Because thousands in the United States believe they have Morgellons, the Morgellons Research Foundation was formed. On the organization's website, Morgellons is described as a disease which leaves painful sores all over the body. The sores ooze blue fibers, white threads, and little black specks of sand-like material. But patients like Tina say, the worst is the constant feeling that your skin is crawling. " They try to get in your eye, the corner of your eye, I start rubbing, you can feel granules coming out, " said Willis. Tina says the disease definitely leaves its mark, and that before she contracted it, she never had the splotchiness on her face, or bruise-like splotches on her legs, or these red marks on her arms. Aside from the physical marks, those who think they have Morgellons complain of similar symptoms, a constant itching crawling sensation, chronic fatigue, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, bipolar disorder, depression, joint swelling and hair loss. Morgellons is yet to be recognized by the medical community. In a letter Fox 16 obtained from the Centers for Disease Control, Director Julie Gerberding, states, " Morgellons Disease and skin conditions of unknown etiologies have been matters of concern to the CDC for some time, and have been the subject of a number of inquiries from the public and attention from our staff. " But the CDC isn't saying whether Morgellons Disease is really a disease, or a figment of patient’s imaginations. The letter goes on to say, " CDC has examined approximately fifty photos of lesions or objects submitted by patients with complaints of Morgellons in the past few months. No parasites or other agents have been identified. " Still, Tina says it's real. " The bugs are crawling on my face, " said Willis. Dr. Nate Smith, is an Infectious Disease Specialist with the Arkansas Department of Health, and says he feels for patients like Tina, but says not enough is known about Morgellons. " I think all of these people are suffering, so all have real disease, whether fibers, and lesions, are related to what's causing them or not, I don't know, " said Dr. Nate Smith. Tina has spent thousands of dollars trying to find out exactly why she feels like bugs are crawling under her skin, but doctors from all over Central Arkansas keep telling her it’s all in her head. Dr. Smith says as more surfaces on Morgellons Disease, the Arkansas Department of Health, would act on the information, but right now, he says it's hard to know what to do, because so many questions are unanswered. Doctors don't know if it's real, what causes it, how many people have it, or if it's contagious. The Morgellons Foundation claims to have about twelve hundred people registered on their site. Because not much is known about Morgellon's, not much is being done about it. That's where the logjam begins. Officials with the foundation are urging those who think they may have Morgellons to write the CDC, and to submit evidence. CDC officials say, they have and will continue to investigate all claims. " It's so unreal, it's unnatural, I wouldn't wish this on anyone, for this to attack them like this, " said Tina. " To be nobody-but-myself in a world which is doing its best, night and day, to make me everybody else - means to fight the hardest battle which any human being can fight, and never stop fighting.
