" For five decades, Presidents have approached this challenge and then backed away - and powerful interests have had their way. As Democrats, we have to take up the cause and refuse to back down. We can't triangulate this issue; no, we have to go to the heart of it - affordable health care for every American. " In Court Papers, a Political Note on '04 Protests http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/073106S.shtml When city officials denied demonstrators access to the Great Lawn in Central Park during the 2004 Republican National Convention, political advocates and ordinary New Yorkers accused Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg of squelching demonstrations that could embarrass fellow Republicans during their gathering. The Bloomberg administration denied being guided by politics in banning the protests. But documents that have surfaced in a federal lawsuit over the use of the Great Lawn paint a different picture, of both the rationale for the administration's policy and the degree of Mr. Bloomberg's role in enforcing it. Lopez Obrador Calls for Encampment http://www.truthout.org/docs_2006/073106T.shtml Runner-up presidential candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador called on hundreds of thousands of supporters at a rally Sunday to set up encampments in the central square and along miles of the capital's most famous boulevard until a federal tribunal orders a recount of the July 2 election. Britain and California Sidestep Bush to Join Forces on Global Warming http://www.truthout.org/issues_06/073106EA.shtml Britain and California are preparing to sidestep the Bush administration and fight global warming together by creating a joint market for greenhouse gases. The aim is to fix a price on carbon pollution, an unwanted byproduct of burning fossil fuels like coal, oil and gasoline. The idea is to set overall caps for carbon and reward businesses that find a profitable way to minimize their carbon emissions, thereby encouraging new, greener technologies. Senate to Vote on Allowing Offshore Drilling http://www.truthout.org/issues_06/073106EB.shtml With war raging in an oil-rich part of the world, interest in tapping domestic sources of the precious resource is becoming more acute. At stake is a moratorium - renewed annually by Congress since 1981 - that protects much of the Atlantic and Pacific outer continental shelf from oil and gas drilling. Now lawmakers are moving to open more coastal areas to energy development. The House passed a bill favoring this, and the Senate is poised to do so as well. Sentinels Under Attack http://www.truthout.org/issues_06/073106EC.shtml Toxic algae that poison the brain have caused strandings and mass die-offs of marine mammals - barometers of the sea's health. These blooms of toxic algae are part of a worldwide pattern of oceanic changes that scientists attribute to warming waters, excessive fishing, and a torrent of nutrients unleashed by farming, deforestation and urban development. Medicare Beneficiaries Confused and Angry Over Gap in Drug Coverage http://www.truthout.org/issues_06/073106HA.shtml Tens of thousands of Medicare beneficiaries who signed up for prescription drug coverage are paying monthly premiums, but Medicare is not paying any of their drug costs because they have reached a gap in their coverage. The gap, the notorious " doughnut hole, " is upsetting many beneficiaries, and it has become a potent symbol as politicians debate the merits of the new program. US Employers Look Offshore for Health Care http://www.truthout.org/issues_06/073106HB.shtml After going overseas to outsource everything from manufacturing to customer services, American businesses - pressed by rising health care costs - are looking offshore for medical benefits as well. Men Not Working, and Not Wanting Just Any Job http://www.truthout.org/issues_06/073106LA.shtml Millions of men in the prime of their lives, between 30 and 55, have dropped out of regular work. They are turning down jobs they think beneath them or are unable to find work for which they are qualified, even as an expanding economy offers opportunities to work. Most of these missing men are former blue-collar workers with no more than a high school education. But their ranks are growing at all education and income levels. The Problem of a Pregnant Pause http://www.truthout.org/issues_06/073106WA.shtml Despite family-leave laws, the number of pregnancy discrimination cases is on the rise in the US. Guest guest
Kerry misses the boat completely. I doubt many people on this list want healthcare which includes dangerous pharm drugs and pig-ignorant alopathic doctors. If that kind of health care were availble at no cost to me, with no co-pay for treatments or meds, I still would not want it. I want health care that includes a cheap way to buy vitamins and supplements, and allows me to visit alternative health care professionals at no or minimal cost. But I sure don't want any health plan that makes the fat cats in the pharm industry and hospital industry get even fatter. Alobar I would like those things also. But, It isn't quite that simplistic. It surely isn't about Kerry ( believe me, I am not a fan of Kerry's ). It is about a sytem that is a monopoly and has been for 100 years now. That is not about one guy. It is the only system promoted by all politicians. Why? I hope that you all learn. That system isn't really isn't about healthcare. It is about promoting disease and then selling symtom relief. But everyone believes that it is great because of a century of propaganda, buying of politicians which results in a government beholden and working for benefit of the rich pharmacuetical, medical and other interests. Since the allopaths are the only game in town for most serious illness, most people will get snared in the system sooner or later, and since it is a way to extract most of the assets that most people have, they might get a break with universal healthcare though I really doubt it. The right would use healthcare insurance to extract as much money as possible and give poor coverage. If it ever passes, it will be because they will want to take the healthcare insurance load off of Big Business. These are only a few considerations, there are mnay more possiblities and ramifications. So, yes, I would like to be able to go to an alternative healthcare provider and to take natural medicines ( so probably would most people) with a healthcare plan, but I really don't think that is going to happen in the USA. I suggest that you and others researxh the history of allopathy and it's roots and ties to the chemical industry, the petrolium industry, government subversion, robber barons, and how they really got that rich, etc. F.
