Chromium question

I have been reading about Chromium. I have been taking Chromium now

for over a decade. Recently, I have read that one should not exceed

200 mcg a day, except under the guidance of a physician.

Number one, I can't afford doctors. Number two, whenever I have

consulted doctors about supplementation in the past, I found them all

to be a bunch of really ignorant idiots. In my experience, docs give

dire warnings about exceeding the RDA of most any vitamin or mineral,

but never warn about the much more dangerous drugs they prescribe. I

have no doubt that knowledgable docs exist, but in my experience, the

internet has far far more useful supplement info than any doc I ever

paid money to.

I want to know the symptoms of taking too much Chromium, and what

other supplements should be taken when one takes high dose Chromium.

Anyone have any thoughts on this?

The best lesson is an object lesson. If you been doing this for 20 years and

no ill effects, then that must be the right thing to be doing. A couple times

a week or whenever I think of it I take a couple yeast tablets which are

supposed to be high in chromium among other stuff. And I eat a lot of powdered

almonds and hazelnuts which also supposed to be a source of chromium. I seem to

be in good health.

If you do a search of Chromium overload or similar, there will be sites

stating that people take 400/600ug.

Dietary chromium reacts differently in the body to supplementary chromium.

Do you have a holistic doctor in your area? He/she may be able to answer

your question. And, yes, it may be a little expensive but many of these

kinds of doctors will do pro bono work or setting up a payment plan that you

can live with.

And best of all, they won't freak about the supplements you are on!

But be careful about scouring the Internet. I try to stick with reputable

sites like NIH or WebMD. The Internet is filled with myths passed off as

reality. Chew the hay and spit out the sticks. If it sounds too good to be

true, it is.

1. I can barely afford rent, utilities, food, and supplements right

now. Paying even $50 to a doc is out of the question.

2. Nobody I know uses a holistic doc, so I have no idea if any such

exist, or whether he or she is any good.

I have been gleaning the internet now for alternatived health info for

about 5 years. Very few sites to I agree with completely. But even

the kooky whacko sites sometimes have useful tidbits to share.

I had been taking 200 mcg of Chromium Picolinate, twice a day, for a

long time. I upped my dose to 600 mcg of Chromim for trhe past

several months, with no noticticable ill effect. A few days back,

after reading unclear warnings about high dose Chromium, I cut back to

400 mcg, twice a day. My blood sugars went up 10-15 points. When I

went back up to 600 mcg, twice a day, blood sugars went back down.

I did some further looking since my original post in this thread.

Chromium Picolinate is about 1/8 Chromium and 7/8 Picolinate by

weight. So 1200 mcg of Chromium Picolinate per day is really only

about 150 mcg of Chromium, which is not that much. I am assuming

that the maximum dose for Chromium is based on weight of Chromium,

rather than the whole molecule, but I do not know for sure.

Here is a suggestion you may have missed. Google really is broken down into

several areas but mainly..Google Net and Google Groups. Groups means...an

archive of past and present News Groups postings which have been made. This

generally excludes postings such as this one. So my tip is this:

when you

search the net as you do, also go to Google Groups then to Google Advanced

Groups Search and try various " search terms " . For awhile, you may want to limit

your Search to such News Groups as Misc.health.alternative or

Sci.med.nutrition

What I like best are the down-to-earth narratives that people will make

there, in terms we all can understand. Your posts too are interesting and are

easy

to connect with.

Alobar -

There is a woman on the CFS_EBV chatlist that sees an integrative doc in Phoenix

(or was it Tuscon?) that she really likes and she says she feels 70% better

since her onset. If I lived closer I would go. It's only 6 hours for me, but I

like the general path my naturapath has me on, for now at least. Right now I'm

just trying to detoxify and get my adrenals up to snuff so that I can treat my

thyroid. One thing at a time!

It's just a hunch, but I don't think I'll get " fixed " until stem cell research

is brought about for this. Meanwhile, I treat myself better than I used to and

that has made a huge difference.

Can I ask how you are getting your adrenals 'up to snuff' as a hypoT

sufferer myself I was not aware of the adrenal problems that can stop any

thyroid

medication from working until joining a group in the UK that is purely for

thyroid - I take a supplement for my adrenals and the difference is amazing.

Why will it take stem cell to get you fixed?

What supplements or herbs are you taking to adjust adrenal glands?

I take a supplement called Nutri Adrenal Extra - which has helped me so much

and I have only been on them a couple of months - if your adrenals are not

working properly then you can take double the thyroid medication and it will

have no effect at all.
