Guest guest
Hi, My father had a triple bypass a few years ago so I after reading about alternative heart treatments, I started him on CoQ10, fish oil, Vit C & E, and other supplements. The one supplement that I would really like him to take is magnesium. The problem is that he gets bad knee pains when he takes it (tried both citrate and oxide). Before taking any of these supplements, he had some undiagnosed knee pain which I think may be gout or pseudogout which has since gone away, but comes back when taking Magenesium. I am leaning more towards pseudogout because he has calcified arteries - so if Ca++ is in the arteries where it doesnt belong, it might be in his joints too. My question is: has anybody had experience with magnesium causing joint pain? How can stop magnesium from hurting his knees? To draw his Calcium into his bones, I started him on VitK2. Any thoughts on this? My background: I am a 3rd year medical student (yes, at an MD school) and have " seen the light " when it comes to alternative/complementary therapies and hope to intergrate them one day into my practice. Thanks
Guest guest
Try MAGNESIUM OROTATE . It is much more effective than other forms of magnesium, and penetrates the cell membranes. This is the work of Nieper. Good luck, Lisa
Guest guest
Try other forms of Magnesium, like Glycinate(that's what I use). Also you may want to consider using digestive enzyme supplementations that also contains some HCL, as many older people secrete very little of it and therefore have a problem absorbing minerals and fully digesting proteins. Fats are important for proper mineral absorption, so make sure that you include them as part of a meal whenever he takes his supplements. Don't forget sunshine or cod liver oil in the winter for vitamins D and A. Good luck to you and your father. My daughter is a fourth year medical student at Columbia, in NYC but she is too busy just coping with all her conventional training to take the time to learn about alternative medicine... P. S. Have you considered IV chelation therapy for removing Ca deposits in your Dad's the arteries? Guest guest
Hi CaptnSaj, Have your father soak his feet or bathe in a small amount of warm water with Epsom salts added - 1/2 cup to 1 cup - dissolved in the water and soak for 1 hour - the longer time to soak, the more absorption of the Magnesium Sulfate he will receive. I believe that Epsom salts help detoxify the body of unwanted chemicals. Guest guest
Try Magnesium Oil. The magnesium is absorbed through the skin.
Guest guest
I do not know about magnesium causing pains. Guggulu is very good for joint problems. Boswellia is another. Guest guest
In a similar vein, does anyone have a natural remedy for muscle cramps? My blood work is fine. My mother suffered from them as well.

Guest guest
Hi, You don't mention what dosage magnesium you had him on. In my studies we learn that magnesium is the major mineral for detoxification, but if detoxification proceeds too quickly then the patient can experience a Herxheimer reaction (healing crisis). Perhaps the Mg dose is pulling Ca out of his tissues quickly, but the rest of his system is unable to keep up by either excreting it out of the body or reintegrating it into bone. Perhaps you need to try him on a lower dose of magnesium and work him up to a higher dose. Anything over 500mg of elemental magnesium per day would be considered a high Mg dose from a nutritional medicine point of view. Hope that helps. Guest guest
If the pain is on the inside of the knee, it may be that the magnesium irritates the liver, hence the knee via the liver meridian. Is the inside of the big toe also tender when pressed? Mike CaptnSaj <zalzala Wednesday, 17 October, 2007 7:32:28 PM Magnesium causing joint pain? Guest guest
Muscle cramping can be caused by a leaky gut and eating high oxalate foods. I suffered leg cramps for many years before discovering the tryin g low oxalates list. Now, by changing my diet and adding Calcium Citrate before meals, more than 95% of my leg cramps are gone. Guest guest
>does anyone have a natural remedy for muscle cramps? < Six different deficiencies have caused muscle problems for me: Salt, potassium, magnesium, proper forms of calcium, water, and B-vitamins. I also suspect CoQ10 can alleviate some cramps. Muscle strength is an issue as well and is helped tremendously by Creatine, Whey Protein and Liver Powder, with Liver Powder being both the least palatable and most effective. Guest guest
Thanks for the responses! I origanally tried my father on Magnesium oxide, which is 500mg - but since its not absorbed very well, who knows how much he is getting. After a few days, he got knee pains - like he had a few years ago before taking any supplements (his doctor said it was osteoarthritis, but I don't agree). The pain went away a few days afert stopping Mg. Then I waited a few weeks and switched him to 200mg per day of Mag citrate - better absorbed. Same thing happened. Perhaps I will try the epsom salt soak then work him back up to the pills. Comments? , " sharonstrahan " <sharonstrahan wrote: > > Hi, > > You don't mention what dosage magnesium you had him on. Guest guest
It sounds like you are using tablets/pills... perhaps he's reacting to some of the binders or/and inactive ingredients in the pill! Have you try something in a powder form, like " calm " which dissolves readily in hot water? I take Mag as Mag Glycinate w/o any problem! Guest guest
That is so weird because I have alot of joint and soft tissue pain. The magnesium actually helps me and stops some of the pain. I have never felt worse after taking it. , " CaptnSaj " <zalzala wrote: > > Hi, > > My father had a triple bypass a few years ago so I after reading > about alternative heart treatments, I started him on CoQ10, fish oil, > Vit C & E, and other supplements.
