Brandy,

Avian (bird) researchers have known for over 20 years that the fumes

emitted from non-stick cookware/appliances can kill pet birds. We

adopted our first bird nearly 12 years ago. When I researched their

care, and read the info, I realised even then, that if the fumes did

such damage to birds, they could not be " good " for people either. We

got rid of all our non-stick cookware/appliances at that time, but I

have kept up on the research of these nasty chems, and they have

become one of my worst " pet peeves " due to all the damage they have

caused.

Birds are an " indicator " species, and many times the effects of

chemicals can show up in them, way before showing effects on larger

species, like people.

It has only been in the last few years tho, that researchers have

begun to study the chemical's effects in people. They have found

that the fumes can cause " Polymer Fume Fever " when people are exposed

to them. Its a " flu-like " syndrome/illness, that can last 2-3 days

in people that have been exposed to the fumes. (the fumes are

colorless and odorless, so you can't detect them)

There have also been many other studies recently, regarding the

effects on the environment, the way the chems are being stored in

organs/tissues of people/animals, and the effects of those " stored "

chems in the body.

One of the best articles I've ever seen written was published by EWG

(Environmental Working Group). This group is well-known for putting

pressure on Gov't " Regulatory " Agencies to remove toxic substances,

and also for informing the public about them. They were very active

in getting the CCA " arsenic treated lumber " for decks/picnic

tables/landscape timbers/playgyms off the market, and they are also

currently working on the FDA to inform the public about all the toxic

and cancer-causing chemicals in personal care products/cosmetics.

The link to the PFC article is at:

http://www.ewg.org/reports/pfcworld/es.php

This link is the first page out of 10, but you can click all the

headers on the left side of the page, for individual pages (or just

hit the Next Page link to read each page right thru). They cover all

the different topics/aspects of these chems, including their health

effects, and even some info on how/what products to avoid to lessen

exposure to them.

Most people think its just " Teflon " that causes the toxicity, but in

fact, it is all the non-stick products that use the PFC chemical

coatings on them. DuPont claims that the fumes are only released

when the cookware/appliances reach high temperatures, however, avian

researchers have been finding that chems are released at much lower

temps, including those that are within normal cooking ranges.

You can find additional information in google searches, but the

article above is the most in-depth one I've ever read on the subject.

Hope this helps...
