Guest guest
I just received a note from a company that sells Yin Chiao and they are advising the use of it daily during flu season. I always prescribe it for when people are starting to feel like they're getting a cold. Any thoughts on taking it daily? Thanks, Mark
Guest guest
Mark, I agree with your use of YQ, as needed. I have had best success in the area of cold and flu prevention by supporting and strengthening qi and yang, using low doses and taking periodic 3-5 day breaks in herb consumption. Yin Qiao is cooling and mildly disperses the exterior, which would be more appropriate after one's system is confronting symptoms. Long term use of Yin Qiao runs the risk of overly cooling the interior and weakening yang. Also, in the event a person taking daily Yin Qiao actually catches a cold or comes down with the flu then Yin Qiao would likely be less effective. In the very early stages of cold symptom onset I still like to use a combination of tonification along with herbs, perhaps like YQ, to reduce the virulence of the pathogen. I eliminate the tonics as soon as the symptoms are entrenched, or just before if your timing is good. I personally find herbs to relieve wind damp to be useful in this early stage... components like ci wu jia or han fang ji, especially if there is the classic symptom of aching and stiffness in the muscles. I find the wind damp herbs to be much more effective to relieve this external condition, in most cases, than herbs to regulate the exterior, like jing jie. Chuang Xiong Cha Tiao is for Wind-Cold. Yu Ping Feng is tonifies lung qi and stabilises the exterior. Pattern differentiation always folks. For thos who do not study or are not pratitioners: wind-heat: sore throat, fever more than chills, yellow sputum, aversion to heat wind-cold: runny nose, stiff neck, chills more than fever, aversion to cold deficienct lung qi w/ unstablised exterior: aversion to wind, chills often, light sweats Bye!
