Herbal Contraception?

Hi Yandy, & All,

Google has thousands of hits on herbal contraception, male and

female. See: http://tinyurl.com/4se9f

Many herbs are abortifacient at standard (and especially at high)

doses, but I would not recommend those, especially to people

whose beliefs disallow abortion as a routine way to prevent the birth

of a developing embryo.

I meant to identify the better URLs and put together a short review

of contraceptive herbs, but I could not find the time this weekend.

So, before I forget (because I probably will not come back to this

thread soon), here are a few off-the-cuff comments.

1. Unwanted pregnancies are a HUGE problem in today's busy-

busy and expensive societies. Educating children, especially

through private schools and university, is a very expensive and time-

and energy- demanding task.

2. Unless thay wish to conceive, women (and their partners) today

need the HIGHEST success rate possible in contraception. The

method(s) used should carry minimal health-risks.

3. Most heterosexually active couples use " the pill " , depot

injections, IUD, vasectomy, tubal ligation, or condoms.

4. In emergencies, if very safe contraception is unavailable at " get

lucky " time, " safe-sex " is the only 100% safe method. To avoid

pregnancy in that context, " safe sex " means NO SEX, or at least

no male penetration of the female genitalia. There are many ways

to skin a cat ...

Herbal formulas like judiciously positioned Rongshuye (Folium Fici

microcarpae), or Tian He Mi Yin (Heavenly Harmony Elixir),

described separately if Attilio sees fit to allow it, are 100% safe.

Apart from formulas of those types, ANY other herbal method,

IMO, is simply too unpredictable, or clinically unsound, UNLESS

both partners agree (in calm discussion at a time when libido is not

an issue) that a pregnancy would be acceptable to them should it

arise.

Some research suggests that Extract of Semen Gossypii (Cotton

S), or gossypol (its active ingredient), can be a very effective and

reversible male contraceptive. It is said to bring sperm counts to (or

near) zero in a few weeks, On withdrawal of gossypol, the sperm

counts are said to normalise in a few weeks. Side effects include

headaches, some impotence, etc, but are said to be manageable.

However, apart from occasionally using recreational medicaments

or herbs, men are not noted for their willingness to allow medical

interference with their genital apparatus. Indeed, the mere thought

of iatrogenic erectile dysfunction gives many men the willies - also

limp willies!

Therefore, IMO, it would be a naive woman who trusts any man,

even her male life-partner, who pleads for entry to the Palace of

Yin, saying: " It's OK, honey, I'll only put it in for a second, and I

have taken a double-dose of gossypol with my oats (porridge) this

morning! "

Best regards,

Phil
