Monday, February 03, 2003 - Dear Readers: Recently I asked you to

share granny's folk remedies. These homegrown tips are not intended

to take the place of your physician's advice, nor does my printing

them imply effectiveness. Here is a sample of what you had to say:

" Whenever I had a bad day at school, my grandma would make me ginger

tea. She also used this if I was throwing up. Boil water and add

fresh ground ginger and honey. Drink as much as you like and you will

feel better. " - D.P., Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

" My Aunt Dolly would get rid of lice in a smelly but simple way. She

would wet our scalp and hair with vinegar and then wrap it in a

vinegar-soaked towel. Then she'd cover the wet towel with a dry towel

and make us wear this overnight. The eggs came out during the morning

shampoo. " - P.S., Birmingham, Ala.

" Here's the secret to getting rid of warts for good. Put a drop or

two of some grapefruit seed extract onto it. Cover it with a bandage

and repeat this twice a day. In about a week, the wart will turn

white and fall off. " - B.L., Kansas City, Kan.

" Living in Florida, you can imagine how frequently we would sunburn.

My mom would slice fresh cucumbers and rub us down. Then, we'd get

into a tubful of cool water that had about a half-teaspoonful of two

essential oils, lavender and chamomile. Ahhhhh. After 10 minutes, we

felt human again. " - P.S., Marco Island, Fla.

" When I had shingles, I read that you can drink celery juice and this

can ease the pain. I did this with my juicer, and, whoa, did it ever

help. I'd recommend this to all your readers to help alleviate the

pain. " - D.W., Decatur, Ill.

" You know the kind of olive oil that people use in salads? You can

put that on a cotton pad and apply it to your anal opening. It will

instantly reduce pain and speed healing. " - O.E., Washington, D.C.

" To get rid of unsightly age spots, just rub castor oil on them every

morning and evening. The spots will disappear in 30 days. " - J.J.,

Watertown, N.Y.

" I am a granny. A few years ago, I learned that drinking Gatorade

could help stop nighttime leg cramps. My husband and I drink half a

cup - any flavor - every bedtime, and we have not been bothered with

leg cramps ever since. " - R.B., Boca Raton, Fla.
