Guest guest
Aloha, Has anyone ever heard of a fragrance or flowering tree called Bak Lan, or Pak Lan? They were cutting one down in my neighborhood recently, and someone was telling me about it. He said it originated in China and now Madagascar is the main producer of the oils from the flower, which are all expoerted to France for perfume. I was heartbroken to see this tree cut down (well, it's actually been severly pruned back) and became immediately interested. The fellow telling me all this had no interest or knowledge of EO's so could not elaborate very well on the subject. Also, it was hard to hear, over the sound of chainsaw. There is a chance that I could air-layer the tree and get a bit of it growing in my own yard. It's very rare here in Hawaii, and should be preserved as much as possible. I tried to look it up on the internet, but must not have the spelling right.... Does anyone have a clue? Asira
Guest guest
Anya, Thanks for that link, it demystifies this tree for me, considerably. Pak-Lan, aka white champaca. Are the EO's of this flower readily available? I've never heard of it. Does it go by another name, still? It said it's related to magnolia and can grow 20' high. The tree I met was at least 50' high. Now it's little more than a stump. But I'm determined to propigate it for myself and for friends, if possible. It's so infuriating to see gorgeous, grand old trees be butchered like that. It's criminal, really. And yes, Linda, the wood would have been wonderful for someone to work with. I cannot believe such waste. Did you know that nearly ALL of the native sandlewood in Hawaii was pillaged over 100 yrs. ago? Now there's a smattering of trees, and no one knows a thing about them... It's part of our heritage, as humans on this planet, and we are so clueless! But boy, we sure all know about all sorts of other " important " things..... like how the get to the mall, or the latest senationalized tragidies being peddled on the newscasts. Guest guest
No clue here, but I wish I had been there for the wood! Would have loved to make a couple bowls from it. Sounds wonderful!
