Would you be willing to pay yearly fees to such an organization? I sure would. >> There is such an organization it is: SAR (the Society for Acupuncture Research) It is embarassing to realize that many schools do not even educate the students as to what is availabe and established. It is a membership organization supported by dues paying members and has been around for over 10 years. In terms of acupuncturist taking responsibility for the profession. So many of you are elloquent writers and provactive speakers- USE your talents. Really this does not need to be organized. Everyone just needs to take the time EVERY TIME you see an opportunity for educating the public and/or setting the record straight step up to bat and take it. If 100 practitioners responded to every bit of misinformation the information would change. In terms of research, on our local TV stations (I live in NYC) i have seen research protocols and outcomes done by nurses with as little as 12 patients getting news coverage and this is in NYC!! I have done national and local tv and have participated in 100's of interviews about this medicine and every one else on this list can too - just make your self available by speaking up when the openings arise. Don't just say 'somebody' should respond to this or that - just respond yourself. Write articles and letters to magazines, eventually one of their writers will contact you -- it's that simple, really. <<The media is a powerful force to effect change--->> the media is a whore and will present whatever is put in front of them. just some more pocket change thanks for listening and thinking about this robbee
Guest guest
Hi Robbee--That is sad, because I had no idea such a group existed. I think that in an ideal world there would be no need to organize a group to get this done, but in the real world most of us are too busy to find the time and motivation to compose articles and figure out how to jump through the hoops to get things out there in the media. I think its fantastic that you have done that, though. But for the rest of us slackers, I think a little organization would make it much more likely to actually happen rather than just fantasizing about it. Little did I know that group does exist...so maybe I should blame them! Of course, its probably the same old problem...too few resources. I had another way of thinking about this recently though. I was talking to a patient about it and she said, " From what I've seen acupuncture doesn't get bad coverage in the media " . Its possible that if we start to draw a lot of attention our way we might set ourselves up for MORE criticism! But I think it would be worth it. The medicine is good enough to stand up to the criticism, and if we could get the public to understand that they cannot listen to the research that's out there it would be so very helpful. I have patients say to me, " I read that acupuncture doesn't work for this, can you give me herbs? " . Its frustrating. Also, people have no idea just how many things we can treat. Of course, then there's Chinese herbs...if they had any idea what we can do there, look out....for lots of more patients but also lots of more regulation. There is definitely something to be said for quietly practicing our medicine. Hi Laura! <http://www.acupunctureresearch.org/> Website gives no clue of the size of the organization, though. I wonder how many on the list are members? If I recall correctly it costs something on the order of $30 per year to join the AMA. If any group is to equal the AMA's penetration they will have to be reasonable in their dues. AOMNC is free. <http://www.aomnc.com/> Regards, Pete
