Pete, I am no expert in that.

However, Medline Abstracts indicate that some trials with biological

methods (use of mosquito predators, or bacteria / fungi that attack

them, have shown very significant reductions in mosquito larvae and/or

adult mosquitos in the area. See: http://tinyurl.com/9d33z

Hi Dr. Phil!

Well, they had better do something. The fish idea won't work in Florida.

The adult mosquitoes eat any fish the rednecks don't catch.

Several months ago i heard an interview with 3ed world officials claiming that

not providing DDT to them is genocide. To them the millions of deaths a year are

a much more argent problem that the side effects of DDT.

Hi Dr. Alon!

Genocide, strong word. I guess they don't like the alternative pesticide

approach Dr. Phil advocates.

They claimed that the only measure that works quickly enough is DDT. They are

loosing millions every year to mosquito born diseases

Hi Dr. Alon!

That makes sense, and they *are* in a position to know, after all.

The problems with the Bio approach as I see them are;

It needs a working bio/medical/scientific structure behind it. The same

Pharmecutical industry that we all know and love so well has on several

occasions blocked funding for the set up of such an infrastructure in the third

world.

In the beginning it would require a healthy start up funding. The IMF/WB and

the US Aid etc have consistently refused such funding.

It takes a government that cares enough to do something a bit more complicated

and consistant than just spraying fly overs in planes...

Lacking in most countries and especially in the third world.

AND

In several third world nations where I have worked the governments use the

flashy (obvious and very visible) mass spraying as a propaganda tool.

In most cases they do not follow any safeguards but seem to just spray

everything and everywhere.

As for the word Genocide as defined by UN conventions it includes denying

medicines or help resulting in a significant number of deaths within a

population base. Deaths from Malaria are pandemic in the developing nations.

Doc

BTW

a web site operated by a member of a law firm with substantial connection to the

Pharm industry is not my first choice for info on such things

Hi Doc!

Well, they probably have good, safe mosquito controls in the nice

neighborhood where the dictator lives, so that is what is important to

them. Sometimes there is nothing anyone can do.

Which website is operated by the lawyer with links to Pharma?
