Guest guest
Hey Sharon, Here's my two cents .. and this is not the first time I have made that comment or the first list I've made it on. I have no PERSONAL knowledge here .. but I have confidence in folks a lot smarter than me who have TESTED the chemical profiles of oils that were left in Spun Aluminum (which is different than the el cheapo stuff) after a year .. and said they found no significant differences that one would not expect from a year of oxidation in the second place. The answer is .. NO .. there is no detriment to spun aluminum .. but all aluminum is not the same. A typical aluminum cooking pot would NOT be an efficient means of storage .. and we can expect a slight change of chemical profile in SOME essential oils .. one that comes to mind (hey Dennis .. jump in) like .. Lemon Myrtle (Backhousia citriodora) which will eat the friggin doors off the vaults at Fort Knox. > Could someone give me some information on oils that come in aluminum > containers? How long can they stay in the container, and is it advisable to transfer > the oils to glass. I have had some oil that is in one but am afraid to open > it not knowing what to do with it afterwards. sincerly sharon Sharon .. the problem is .. methinks .. that commercial distilleries do not use aluminum .. they use stainless steel .. so we gotta know that it is the middle man .. the broker .. who transfers to aluminum. And that person is gonna let in a whole lotta oxygen when they rebottle .. and we know that it is oxygen that EOs don't like. Sorry if I'm going the long way home .. but my opinion is that we need to get an EO out of any large container .. or .. we need to nitrogen flush. When we buy 5 kilos of a very expensive oil .. or 50 kilos or an average priced oil .. we nitrogen flush .. often in 1 gallon small neck jugs. I understand that this is not feasible for folks who are end-users but if you are an end-user then the oil you bought is not a lot to begin with so I recommend you transfer it to glass .. and if you don't want to do a nitrogen flush .. get some pure glass beads and drop them in the bottle. This will reduce the head or dead space that oxygen hides in. Butch
