Guest guest
Had our doctor who wanted the recipe at one time (pre-my existance) and he said that she had a real good thing but not to give out the recipe because of the laws re: medical remidies. Too bad he's gone, I'll bet he would have gotten the stuff for me, trouble is I don't know enough to substitute it with something else... Any ideas? Any one? I have not heard of anyone distilling Hemlock (Conium maculatum) .. but there might be some folks doing it that I'm not aware of. I doubt we have laws against that in the USA .. we're fairly flexible on letting folks make their own mistakes .. I can't think of a reason for such a law as I can't thing of a market for such an oil .. except maybe small amounts for organizations that press dying with dignity and such. Right you are that Hemlock is poison but its not just the oil that's such. http://www.botanical.com/botanical/mgmh/h/hemloc18.html http://www.botanical.com/botanical/mgmh/h/hemwat19.html You'll see from the above that Hemlock (like most any plant) has some medicinal properties .. but its kinda risky to deal with it. > It is part of a poultice that my grandmother used to break up the > congestion of pneumonia! Odds are that a number of more safe substitutes could be used .. and effective they would be. All old cures were not good or safe cures .. but its the failures we hear more about than the successes .. I reckon. Was a time mercury was used for various STD .. especially syphilis .. and glaucoma. Twas said that James Butler (Wild Bill) Hickok often glowed in the dark after treating himself by smearing his body with mercury .. and it might have worked in time .. hard to say .. cause McCall took him out with a couple of .44's to the head. Maybe granny's poultice worked too .. but odds are safer substitutes could do the job just as well. :-) > Kaldea Y'all keep smiling. Guest guest
Hi Kaldea, Welcome to the group! Glad to have you here. Hope you make yourself comfy and at home Do you know what property in particular you are looking for in the hemlock (to find a substitute)? Also, I doubt she had the EO, more likely it was an infused or macerated oil of the herb ... And the only place I can think to get hemlock is in the wild, MAYBE mail order as seed or as the plant (some poisonous plants are available, jimson weed a.k.a datura is one that immediately comes to mind - make a GORGEOUS flower with the most incredible scent but just one seed can lethally poison a child, so I can't even think of growing it), and maybe in a curio shop where it is not sold for " medicinal " purposes, just as a curio for spiritual work. *Smile* Chris (list mom) http://www.alittleolfactory.com J.B. Guest guest
Everyone so far has brought up Poison Hemlock, Conium maculatum (LINN.). Considering that Kaldea is talking about a family folk remedy, there is the possibility they used the Hemlock tree (Tsuga family). Since Pine Tar is used in some remedies and other products, it's not totally offbase to consider the possibility of using Hemlock since it's also a conifer. There are 4 species of Tsuga known to grow in North America (about 10 worldwide) ... Tsuga canadensis (Eastern Hemlock), Tsuga caroliniana (Carolina Hemlock), Tsuga heterophylla (Western Hemlock), Tsuga mertensiana (Mountain Hemlock). For some information on North American Hemlocks, visit http://www.nearctica.com/trees/conifer/genera/tsuga.htm > maybe in a curio shop where it is not sold for " medicinal " purposes, > > just as a curio for spiritual work. This isn't going to be Poison Hemlock in most cases. Most of the Hemlock oil you find in metaphysical and curio shops is actually made with the Hemlock tree. It has a definite 'piney' smell to it. Some shops might sell the Poison Hemlock herb, but none of the ones I've ever been in did.
