Guest guest
Does anyone have any opinions and/or experience adding eo's to lip balm-type products? I'm thinking about adding something like this to my growing list of ideas for products. Lavender sounds nice...to me, anyway, being the huge lavender lover that i am. Also, perhaps some steam-distilled citrus oils as another scent idea. And rose...what a heavenly product that would be! My concern is ingestion of the oils, minute as it might be, being in a lip product. Guest guest
I tried Sweet Orange EO, and added a little stevia (sp?) for sweetner...but that was before I found out that orange eo shouldn't be used in products that will be used in sunlight. Wanting to get some 5 or 10 fold orange to try, as I heard it wasn't as damaging. Rose might be nice, but haven't done an investiagation on the internal aspects of it. Was actually going to try some of the rose wax I got from Chris. Anita in TX Does anyone have any opinions and/or experience adding eo's to lip balm-type products? Guest guest
Hi I've heard Red Mandarin is less photo-toxic than other citrus oils. The 10 fold Orange EO sounds good too. Since Rose is used in skin care so often, I'd think that would be a good choice too. The amount used will be so very minor, I'd think that you'd be fine using almost any eo you choose. Peppermint or spearmint could be fun. Have you considered vanilla oleoresin? Guest guest
Hi Christy, Using oils that are used in food flavorings should not pose a danger as far as toxic ingestion of oils. What you mostly want to be careful of is irritation, sensitization and phototoxicity. Most of the pressed citrus oils present the phototoxic issue. There is some controversy about whether or not pressed Sweet Orange oil is phototoxic. According to the research in Tisserand and Balacs book " Essential Oil Safety " it is NOT a phototoxic oil (but bitter orange oil is!). In Martin Watt's Plant Aromatics it notes that there have been some studies done that say it is not phototoxic, but others have reported that it is (once again, Sweet Orange is the questionable phototoxic oil, pressed rind oil of Bitter Orange is most certainly been proven to be phototoxic) ... That being said .. an oil such as steam distilled lime can be used, spearmint, peppermint, one drop of lemon myrtle, rose, lavender, jasmine wax is used to flavor some lip balms, tea tree is used in many " medicated " lip balms .. the possibilities are many! *Smile* Chris (list mom) http://www.alittleolfactory.com Christy Greenway [fufuno1] Does anyone have any opinions and/or experience adding eo's to lip balm-type products?
