catnip: where to plant

Greetings everyone,

Happy " Stuff your face with Chocolate " day.

Anyone got some ideas on where I should plant some catnip... part of the

garden I mean.

The silly thing is, I picked over the plants carefully, getting the most

healthy plant I could find, took me like half an hour... Then I get in the car

and

am driving home and suddenly I remember, my cat doesn't LIKE catnip. So I'll

be amusing all the cats in the neighborhood instead! >sigh<

Anyway, does it like full sun? Partial shade? Is it invasive?

TIA

Hi Merriebell

I planted some catnip in my garden this spring, it was in full sun and

initially I felt sorry for the poor little plants, they wilted something

horrible in the middle of the day (they were laying on the soil)......but it

thrived.....it now overshadows my rosemary, my parsley, my sage.......I

really need to pull the reigns in on this one. None of the cats, or mine,

show any interest in it.

Cheers

Build a big fence if you want it to stay around.... especially if they LIKE it!

Mine is where it has partial shade and would be doing fabulous except MY cats

LOVE it. :))

I tried to grow some. I had it in a pot on the front porch. Got up the next

morning and all I had was an empty pot, they took it root and all. Tried again,

and put it in a hanging pot. they got it again. Short of planting it on the

roof, I don't know where to plant it that it won't disappear.

let me tell you about cats and hanging pots. I use to hang plants on my front

porch. Had rows of them alternating heighth. Birds liked my big wax plant and

several others that were wound around the hangers making little spaces they

could build a nest in. Now mind, these were no where near the floor.... but

darn, the plants kept falling down!!!

The birds would lay eggs and hatch them. In a few days the cute little baby

birds would disappear. One day I caught a cat climbing the columns on the porch

and hopping from pot to pot to get the birdies. The CATS were knocking down the

plants. Of course, I didnt have any catnip hanging there..... and now I dont

have plants there either.

Merriebell,

You wouldn't believe what this stray cat went through to get to that pot but my

jingo's it did. I shooed it off but it must have made a return trip in the

night because the next day there was half of it gone. Bet it was a pretty sight

watching it weave down the sidewalk after it had ingested half of the plant.

Probably took it a week to sober up. Wonder if they ever have to attend catnip

anonymous meetings. LOL

In my area (Northern Utah) no one " plants " catnip because it is a noxious

weed! It springs up everywhere, in the raspberries, in the flower beds,

everywhere, but especially likes enough moisture and partial shade. I have

thought of

distilling it in my home distiller, but don't know of any uses. The horses

won't even touch it and we don't have cats. So, it just gets pulled and thrown

into compost or trampled in the horse corral.
