(http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp?v=2 & c=5PqtlEihncV4wqZv8qzFsHJv\ H/jZnL0S) October 9, 2008 Dear [First_Name], (http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp?v=2 & c=iK+IhWI5iLw1/X631MoGBnJv\ H/jZnL0S) _Tell the USDA to make artificial hormone-free milk a choice for schools!_ (http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp?v=2 & c=7LoyeuQYu2jyoxivlzLMdXJv\ H/jZnL0S) (http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp?v=2 & c=Lkv0mEUHOkQW8s+TgpFwHHJv\ H/jZnL0S) Public comments on reauthorization of the Child Nutrition Act (CNA) are due to the USDA by October 15th. Congress will begin to reauthorize this bill next spring. The CNA includes the National School Lunch Program, School Breakfast Program and the Summer Food Service Program, among others. _Tell USDA you want our nation's schools to have the choice of artificial hormone-free milk._ (http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp?v=2 & c=FhQPScIiD2/pLwDEZZK8r3Jv\ H/jZnL0S) 540 million gallons of milk were distributed through the federal nutrition assistance programs in 2006. That is a lot of milk. Unfortunately, some of the milk is coming from cows treated with the artificial growth hormone rBGH. Studies have shown that rBGH, the artificial growth hormone given to cows to increase milk production, also significantly increases IGF-1, a naturally occuring growth hormone in the cow and the cow's milk. Too much IGF-1 in humans is linked with increased rates of type II diabetes, colon, breast and prostate cancer. Why expose our nation's children to an artificial hormone that could be linked to disease? Consumer preference for milk produced without the use of artificial growth hormones has been overwhelming, and major retailers across the country including Walmart, Kroger, Publix, and Safeway have all switched to artificial hormone-free fluid milk. Increasing numbers of dairies across the U.S. are going artificial growth hormone-free, making artificial growth hormone-free milk widely available and cost competitive in most markets. _Let the USDA know that the time is right to get artificial hormone-free milk back into our schools!_ (http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp?v=2 & c=/D5Nu1HZY0hxNL4uZPRabXJv\ H/jZnL0S) Sincerely, Noelle, Sarah, Filmona and the entire Food Team.
