Kathy, you are very correct about the wording 'Free Range' on chicken eggs. Be even more leary if you see one saying 'Vegetarian Fed'. We raise our own poultry and everything is loose and free ranging(three acres) year round, supplimented with Timothy and other hay, special feeds and NO animal protein in our feeds. People tell us our eggs are superb, and we know they are. As for those 'Vegetarian Fed' ones? I have NO clue how that can be if they are free range. (The first bug they eat-there goes your vegetarianism!)

'Cage Free' is just another way of saying they get out of the cages and run around on the concrete or dirt inside the building. They may even get to go outside but not out of their little yards. Ours are just out there all over the place, (I even have to snowblow the yard for them-they're that spoiled!) and VERY healthy.

You're right and more people should be checking into what they are buying because those labels can be very deceiving, bordering on outright lies! Bob at Sandyloopfarm.

Thank you for the info Bob. My question is, exactly what should it read on the label? I live in New Port Richey, FL (the trinity area) and i do not know of any 'farms' that we can go to to get eggs, but i belong to a co-op and we get eggs and dairy and meats as often as we can from the co-op, but the person that supplied the fresh eggs from the farm no longer does so we do get eggs but they come in a carton and do say all of the 'free-range' stuff, etc...but what can i really look for to know for sure that they are really what we want??? Also, if anyone read this and knows of anywhere nearby that i can get eggs, milk, meats, produce etc from a farm, please feel free to e-mail me the info! Right now the co-op is from a few of us at work and we take turns going to Tampa but it is quite a ways to go....wish there was something closer!

Bob, how do you know where your chickens lay their eggs? I had some free range many years ago and I always had to hunt for them.

Bob at Sandy Loop Farm -

We are about to get a few chickens from friends and were just discussing the "run around the yard thing," just today. So it is best to let them run around? How do you train NEW chickens where your yard is (I live in a "holler" on 3 acres - on a very private lane - I have never even seen my neighbors home 1/4 mile away - we share a drive) Do we start with their chicks?

And I have to ask - what about this silly bird flu. I suppose my big fear is we get these birds, and then 6 months from now they get that silly bird flu and then what.

What kind of chickens do you have? Are you in to the heritage breeds? Any ideas would be terrific! Any favorite books? Thank you so very much!

I am, quite literally, a chicken to do this - but that is what we moved out here to do!

Wow, good to know. I was so pleased to find the Cage free eggs, but

now I feel all dismayed again. I guess finding a local farm is the

way to go for fresh healthy eggs. Do the farm raised eggs have any

potential problems that we might be concerned about? TY.
