Hey Everyone! I have great news. I am thrilled to

report that Marge Clark has taken pity on my poor

uneducated nose and has offered to send me a fist-full

of wee little sample bottles of all her lavenders.

I shall propose to my new friend a " smell-off " . And I

will be very surprised indeed if we do not manage to

match or better that one lavender.

In any event, it will be great fun, very educational

for me and between Marge's generosity and my lifelong

well honed salesmanship skills I just bet we get a

convert. Maybe I can get her to come onto the list

;-)

Marge, thank you, thank you, thank you!

Hmmmmm. Keep coffee grounds near by so she can " Clean out " her sense of smell

AND it is true that one's nose can get numb and not smell ANYTHING if one is

sniffing too much...

I had a giggle the other day from Mummy's little techno-Geek (and yes Carol,

he gets his charm and good looks for me and the urge to stick a screw driver

in the electrical outlet from his father). I got my order of Lavender and black

Pepper along with some free samples (thank you Butch) and along comes the

little nose hound wanting to smell everything.

So one by one I open the samples and the black Pepper and each one gets an

" Mmmmmmmm " . When we got to the Lavender, he gets a BIG grin on his face and a

huge " MMMMMMMMMMMMMM " issues forth. You can bet that as the little demon grows

up, Lavender is going to be one of HIS fav's.

Lavender and Rose I think. Those are the two that are sprayed on him's little

ouches... the hydrosol, not the oil.

Well, bed time for me. It's been a hard day... little boy is sound asleep and

recuperating from his very trying day.

K

Cheers!

I think the smell off is a great idea. I mixed up some eo's to try for a new

aroma and none of the people I asked smelled the same thing. Isn't it great the

way we all have our ways of smelling things. Kathy

Well, actually this occurred to me. I was wondering

what one might use to " cleanse the palate " between

oils

(how can one tell I just came from a wine

tasting--besides the typos of course LOL)

I think Marge told me she's sending 5 oils? If so, we

do need a " break " in between, because I assume what we

will do is smell YL, then comparison #1, then YL, then

comparison #2, etc, etc,

Any better way to do this???

Please send suggestions. Now that I have a test, I

don't want to blow it.

One way you could do it is to sniff the cap not the bottle on each.......I

don't think she would have to sniff the yl one over and over again as I

would think she would know the smell from one sniff to start out with then

the other ones. jmo

Hi Christina

As well as a break in between, I'd be inclined to remove the labels (including

YL) and just have them with numbers, write comments on each and then reveal

which they are!

Smelling coffee grinds between oils is supposed to help, since I'm a tea

drinker, I haven't tried it..

Have some coffee beans or fresh ground coffee(not brewed) in a cup or muslin

tea bag. Sniff between the scents. It clears the olfactory sensors. I

have a tea bag handy at all my shows. Learned this from a perfumer, and

then have run across it a lot of other places as well.

Christina,

Fresh ground coffee sniffed in between will clean the palate..

Make sure all bottles are numbered and use a strip of paper , instead

of having her sniff from the bottle..

I have my clients sniff the cap, That way it's not too potent for them, I

remember the first time I sniffed Peppermint from the bottle, it was

overwhelming.

Now THERE'S a good idea. Thanks. We'll do that if I

can figure out how to disguise the shape of the

bottle.

OK. I like the paper idea. Does it have to be any

particular paper, or is any old paper strip fine to

use? Now that I think about it, department stores

occasionally use paper strips in the perfume

departments, don't they? Christina

Oooh, that would be good. Just make a master list on the side, so you don't

forget which is which.

I like the idea of her (and me too) writing down the

comments on each number. That way we have a record

for our own interest and education.

You don't have to disguise the shapes of the bottles if you put the drops on

smelling strips that are numbered the same way as the bottles.

When she sniffs the smelling strips then she writes down her comments. Once

done, you compare the comments to whichever numbered bottle and determine

which one was the " winner " .

I know in this case you are using samples but if in the future you were

using actual bottles, using smelling strips would allow you to leave the

label on the bottle and when you put them away then there's no confusion as

to what's in what bottle.
