Guest guest
just wondering since y'all are so good, any good remedies for chiggers? we just bought 55 ac that are in need of alittle TLC. waist high grasses make for great breeding grounds for those nasty little deer ticks and chiggers. i've made up a blend of catnip, lemongrass and lemon tea tree oils which do wonders at keeping the ticks at bay but absolutely nothing for the chiggers. deb c *me butt itches!*
Guest guest
I have a major problem with chiggers. We have 3 ac and most of it is mowed. I try to stay out of the grass because it never fails the little buggers find me and try to devour me. Once one has got me it is like they have left a scent behind and everyother one zeroes in on me. I am just now getting rid of a spot from last year. I used to cover the spot with nail polish but alas, they have reformulated the stuff and now it doesn't really help. Any help in this arena would be greatly appriecated. Guest guest
morning kathy, i've used the fingernail polish route also, which helps alot. they tell me that tight fitting clothing is also a no no with chiggers. kerosene is the product of choice around this neck of the woods but i can't bring myself to put it on my body. my first encounter with the little buggers was my first trip to missouri. my husband took me cat fishing. neglected to warn me about them. i looked like i was wearing a red, 3 in belt around my waist for almost a year. we had a 50th wedding anniversary that same trip and almost 100* weather for the aniversary. needless to say, i took every opportunity to hide behind my husband, anything , to scratch to my hearts content. i was the butt of many a joke for many years to follow. i have been using high alt lavender, neet, which keeps the scratching at bay for awhile but nothing long term. i just wish there was something that would keep them at bay so i don't even have to do that. i woke this morning to find about 20 more spots, i'd been scratching in my sleep. if i didn't know better, i'd think that i had bed bugs. even a shower within 20 mins of getting home didn't help wash them off. around here, they don't tend to be as bad, once the grass is cut. yesterday, i was cutting in almost thigh-high grass. i shoulda known better! deb c ps, guess we just have that sweet blood that they all love and cherish! Guest guest
Marge, So, what would happen if you kept the catnip in her blend? This is what fascinates me about this synergy stuff... I could EASILY see myself putting drips and drops of all kinds of EOs in a blend for the " ultimate critter " blend... besides probably smelling fairly scary, maybe that doesn't work? LOL! Help me understand! Thanks, -- cjk At 01:11 AM 6/8/2004, you wrote: >i've made up a blend of catnip, lemongrass and lemon tea tree oils which >do wonders at keeping the ticks at bay but absolutely nothing for the >chiggers. ditch the catnip and lemongrass, add Sumatra Patchouli and atlas cedarwood to the lemonteatree. that keeps away Tennessee Chiggers... Guest guest
I understand your pain. I usually get them on my legs but this time the beast made it all the way to the top of my thigh. I wish that there was a way to get rid of the as no one else in the family seems to get them. When I take the dog out I stay in the driveway (stones) and then it still feels like they are climbing on me. I read in The complete book of essential oils & aromatherapy by Valerie Worwood to use 10 drops of thyme to a teaspoon of alcohol. The book says any alcohol and apply every 3 hours. Guess I better get some thyme. Guest guest
Hi Kathy, Please be careful with Thyme. It can be a pretty potent e.o. and if used in too strong of a dilution has the potential for burning the skin. Guest guest
My recipe calls for 10 drops in 1 teaspoon of any alcohol. I made only half of the recipe to conserve on the eo as I have never used it before. The aroma is quite potent. Kathy - 6/9/2004 8:54:17 AM Re: Re: chiggers Hi Kathy, Please be careful with Thyme.
