Guest guest
I live in Vancouver, WA which is just across the Columbia River from Portland. Traffic is bad in the Portland area. When we first moved here from North Dakota about 6 years ago, I heard that they are trying to keep the City of Portland a " small town " kind of town, and they aren't going to accommodate the horrendous traffic by adding more traffic lanes. I hate going over to Portland, but then that's why I live in Vancouver. Housing costs are high compared to Vancouver. A lot of Portlanders are moving to Vancouver because of this. There were a lot of school closings a year or two ago due to budget cuts. They let people out of jail due to lack of funds. If you decide to move to Portland, I'd suggest Vancouver, WA. As to Corvalis or Eugene, I'd recommend them over Portland. However, I have not spent any considerable amount of time in either city. Eugene appeared to be quite lovely. Guest guest
My husband and I are talking about possiblly moving to Oregon. We are tired of life in Los Angeles. The traffic is terrible. I'd like to hear from those of you from Oregon, how you like living there. We'll go up there -Corvallis, Portland and Eugene- in July to see if we like it. . Also, I'm hoping to get some training on herbalism if we move there. Thanks in advance. Akiko
Guest guest
Hello Akiko, I have lived here in Salem OR for nearly 19 years and lived in Corvallis for 3. If I had my choice I'd be living in Corvallis (DH said no way). I love it there. College town, friendly people and beautiful! It is more expensive for housing there. Portland is the bigger city and does have it's issues. It is NOTHING like LA however. I grew up in Sacto and am familiar with Los Angeles and other areas since family is there. If you're looking for a smaller less hectic lifestyle then you may want to try Willsonville or surrounding areas that are nice places and close to Portland for what it has to offer. Salem is a small rather " hick " town imo. Have to go to Eugene or Portland for the arts, malls with the cool stores etc... Speaking of Eugene, It's pretty nice too. I think there is a more diverse population there. But, Salem is pretty quiet and I do like living here. And I do know there are places for learning herbalism around here too. Can't think of the names right now, but Brightenbush is a place not to far that is kinda the " hangout " or cool place to go for herbal conferences and such. They have natural hotsprings there too! There are a lot of folks moving this way from California. Myself included. I hope you'll have a great trip in July and enjoy your time here. (It should be fairly dry too and warm). There is a school of herbal studies here, but there is also one in Portland. It really depends what you want. If you are looking for warmer, sunnier areas, try Bend or Ashland. If you like the beach, you might try Newport or Florence. If you travel extensively by air, chose Portland as flights out of Eugene are expensive and the schedules are very limited. Hope that helps. I moved 15 yrs ago from San Diego county to Federal way, Wa which is not far from Seattle. We now live out in Olalla which is between Tacoma and Bremerton and I tell you there is still crime out here in the closest town of 2,790 people. Guest guest
Santa Barbara is nice. Housing is still costly, though. I just moved in LA from Orange when I got married a couple years ago, but my husband has been living here for a long time, and he said the traffic got lot worse within last couple years because of the housing bubble and new construction in Palisades. Also, freeway around LAX is worse since 9/11 because now LAX inspects each car at the entrance and the lines go on to the freeway. Also, what bothers me is that we don't have any nice quiet cafe where we can really relax. There are some nice cafes around here, but the parking is hard to find, and cafes don't want you to stay too long because their overhead is so high. They have small uncomfortable chair and tables, loud music, unfriendly service etc... Anyway, thank you so much for your advice! Akiko spaepiphany wrote: Yes, I've been there. LA is OK for awhile. But I heard that there are lot of sister cities in Japan. Also, I found a website and I guess it's run by OSU students, and it got an article about Japanese American camps during WW2. I never heard American people talking about it like the website does, so I was wondering if it was written by a Japanese American or there is more awareness of the issue among people there. I'm not making any issue out of the camp, but the degree of awareness that the those people were also the members of the community (and the US citizen) gave me some fresh air. > Your welcome.
