Guest guest
Yo Melissa, > I can't help but wonder if this kills nothing but male mosquitos...males > live on flower nectar and such, and therefore might be attracted by the > lemony odor. It's the females that must drink blood for their eggs to develop. You are 100% perzackly correct .. it is the female of most species that normally goes after blood .. and in the case of skeeters it is ONLY the female who does this. A tiny quote from one of the many URLs on skeeters .. and we can't find anything anywhere to contradict this .. > One of the first things that adult mosquitoes do is seek a mate, mate and > then feed. Not much different than humans. > Male mosquitoes have short mouth parts and feed on plant nectar. Except married male homo sapiens rarely get to talk .. and feed on beer. > In contrast, female mosquitoes have a long proboscis that they use to bite > animals and humans and feed on their blood (the blood provides proteins that > the females need to lay eggs). After they feed, females lay their eggs (they > need a blood meal each time they lay eggs). Females continue this cycle and > live anywhere from many days to weeks (longer over the winter); males usually > live only a few days after mating. The life cycles of mosquitoes vary with the > species and environmental conditions. Note the similarities to homo sapiens. > Melissa Bell, mosquito magnet (the little buggers LOVE me!) Probably they are males trying to sniff you cause you're sweet. I read the other day that Great White Sharks rarely bite lawyers .. and men are more likely to get bit by skeeters than are wimmens. Reason for both? Professional Courtesy! > > Not sure what attracts them, the lemon smell, the white plate color, or what, > > but mosquitoes flock to it, and drop dead shortly after drinking the Lemon Fresh > > Joy/water mixture, and usually within about 10 feet of the plate. The lesson here is .. don't drink Lemon Fresh Joy. Y'all keep smiling. :-) Butch http://www.AV-AT.com
