Guest guest
Hi - Here's one I didn't know. When your child gets to highschool you then have to pay for them to receive the highschool credit?? Please explain! Dale
Guest guest
Hi In Texas they now charge you $300 for each subject for each semester. So yes in a away you are paying for the credits. This is also the charge for any grade. Even kindergarten. For me to home school my grandson it would cost me $3000 for the year. And I still have to pay school tax on my property !! hugs, Sally - Dale Bernucca<dbernucca < > Wednesday, September 15, 2004 11:29 AM Wait...Homeschool Credits = $$ Hi - Here's one I didn't know. Guest guest
Are there any activists in Texas working to change that? What an absurdity. That would certainly be a deterrent to moving to Texas for me. > Hi > In Texas they now charge you $300 for each subject for each semester. So yes in a away you are paying for the credits. Guest guest
Hi Sally, Can you give me details on where I can find out about this info? I know quite a few homeschoolers here in Texas and none of them have to pay any money like you are speaking of (ok, they pay for curriculum and books, but that is a separate issue). I have heard that high school students, including homeschoolers, can pay about $300 per credit and start getting early college credits .. maybe someone got that info confused and told you that all kids have to pay $300 per credit when homeschooled? I can't find anything on the net about it and the couple of TX homeschooling friends I've tried to call aren't home right now. Thanks for any info you've got! *Smile* Chris (list mom) http://www.alittleolfactory.com Sally Trew [sallyTrew2] Hi In Texas they now charge you $300 for each subject for each semester. Guest guest
Hi Joshua, I'm going through all my emails now, so pretty much replying back as I see them. Chris posted links on the Texas Homeschooling Laws. Again, homeschooling in Texas is probably one of the easiest states. If I had my child in school and wanted to pull her out, all I would do (and I don't need to do this) is have a letter on file stating that I am homeschooling my child. The state of Texas only requires that you teach your child Math, Reading and Good Citizenship. There are no papers to send in, no forms to fill out, no tests to take and most of all you don't have to pay anything to homeschool your child! In a previous email, I have shown how I homeschool my first grader. Although, when most people ask her what grade she's in she says first and second grade!! With the exception of the ASL course (which is $75.00 for the year), I have not had to pay anything over that to teach my child. Now, I want to teach her a certain curriculum, then that may run up the cost, but again there are wonderful places such as Vegsource and 1001Books on groups where I can go find any curriculum I need or want for garage sale prices!! I've lived in Texas all my life and I ain't goin' nowhere!!! That's just too much to ask of her. There ARE homeschool coops too where kids are home schooled in a group situation. Something else to think about... that kid has enough on her plate without trying to learn everything by herself. Just my opinion.... as someone who is trying to get a college degree " by myself " I can deeply sympathise. K Cheers! Guest guest
Hi Chris, I don't know anything except that her daughter was home schooling . What happened was her husband killed himself in their home and her daughter had some serious issues because of it. She refused to go to school after that. So recently I asked how it was working out and that is when she told me that they had to pay and what it cost and that her daughter only got 3 credits for the year. I will go back and ask her more about it. I will also ask Shawn's caseworker again more about it. This maybe something that is set up here in our school system. I just don't know. I had no reason to doubt what she told me. I know that she is not a stay at home Mom and her daughter does all her lessons on her own. Guest guest
Hi Sally, How awful! It sounds like something is fishy there and maybe they are taking advantage of the bad situation your friend is in. I hope she can get tot he bottom of this. Guest guest
But that would be only if you wanted the HS credit so that you could have a diploma from the school? Is a GED an option and you wouldn't have to pay for the HS credit? I'm sorry for being dense but I would really like to have it explained to me. As Denzel Washington said in Philadelphia: Explain it to me like I'm 5 years old. Please and thanks Dale - Sally Trew Wednesday, September 15, 2004 7:21 PM Re: Wait...Homeschool Credits = $$ Hi In Texas they now charge you $300 for each subject for each semester. Guest guest
I was talking to another homeschool friend and asked her if she had ever heard of something like this. She said something that makes sense. For kids who might have had behavioral problems or something happened that would keep them from a school environment (which sounds like the case since you said she doesn't want to go to school), there is a program called Homebound students. This is done through the school and you do have to pay for it. It has nothing to do at all with homeschooling. With homebound students they are using the same curriculum as they are doing in school plus there are caseworkers and such that keep up with the family to make sure the student is doing the work they're supposed to. Maybe she just figured since her daughter was home and the materials were being furnished by the school that they were homeschooling. Homebound and Homeschooling are two different things. Homebound students would not be covered under the Homeschooling Laws. There are some working moms that homeschool their children, but it doesn't cost anything. Heck, there's even some single, working homeschooling moms!! These girls I admire a lot!! Not only do they need to make sure that their children have somewhere to go or someone to watch them while they are gone. They also take it upon themselves to teach their children too.
