Guest guest
I'm on a search for ideas, and I'll welcome the chance to brainstorm with the members here. I had a serious brain injury nine years ago, and I have been going through substantial health problems and complications since then. I have explored many realms of holistic health, but it's been tough to find anything that works for me. Among the issues I'm trying to address, my balance and sensory systems were damaged in the injury. I cannot handle larger places (everything from malls and athletic arenas to walking down a city streets). I lack the sensory perception to handle the many places people take for granted in their daily lives. Another sensory issue has been my sense of gravity. At times I feel like I'm falling (they way you would if someone pushed you off a tall building and you were in free-fall). I've also had sensations of lightheadedness as if my head were filled with helium. Vertigo has been another issue. I have chronic bouts with vertigo, and those can be triggered by a number of things including weather changes. Food allergies have also emerged in the wake of this injury, and though I'm managing for the moment, it's been difficult to make meaningful progress. Things have been out of sorts emotionally as well. I have chronic emotional shifts (from rage to depression to utter indifference, and I have become exceedingly sensitive to the emotions of people and places around me). In my efforts to regain my health, I have tried a number of holistic modalities only to find that I cannot tolerate them. Homeopathy quickly became too much for me, energetic modalities like Reiki produced profoundly bad reactions, as did Yoga and Thai Chi. I also found EFT was too much for me, and I had bad responses to crystals and a variety of prayer and positive affirmation therapies. More recently, I found an energy healer who had helped many unusually sensitive people, and she was able to help me to some extent, but she too has reached a point where she is baffled by what is happening to me. She feels there is help for me, but she's not sure what that will be. Her only definitive opinion is that I'm the most sensitive patient she's ever had. Again, I'm on a search for answers, and I'll welcome the chance to brainstorm with the members here. Any replies appreciated. Tom
Guest guest
Tom, In my research, I have discovered the following items are good for a healthy brain: Alpha Lipoic Acid Acetyl-l-carnitine Bacopa Clove bud Cod liver oil Eyebright Folic Acid GABA Ginkgo leaf Ginseng Glutamine Gotu kola Huperia serrata Lipotrim Lugol's iodine Niacin Nuts Omega-3 fatty acids Quercetin Sage Schisandra berry Vitamin B12 Vitamin B-complex Vitamin C Vitamin E (Wheat germ oil) Zinc NO fluoride NO aspartame NO aluminum Keep in mind that the brain is made up largely of fats; so avoid all artificial cooking oils and margarine and go with coconut oil and butter instead. Avoid all soda pop; not only is it acidic but the genetically-modified high fructose syrup used as a sweetener is toxic. Even worse is the aspartame put into diet sodas. You must eliminate all fluoride; buy a British Berkefeld water filter with the optional PF-2 filter that eliminates fluoride for drinking and cooking. Iodine in the form of Lugol's is excellent in that in not only helps the brain, but detoxes harmful substances such as fluoride, bromide, chlorine, aluminum, and mercury. Take 15 mg/day, work up to 50 mg/day, and after three months, go back to 15 mg/day. This is to achieve full body sufficiency. There is much more, but this information should get you started. I'm almost 60, but mentally as " sharp as a tack " by following the above regimen. Guest guest
Interesting discussion about osteopathy or chiropractic for Tom who had brain injuries restulting from an adjustment. I hope someone can find help for him. Has anyone ever heard of " BioCranial Chiropractic? " Practitioners of this art claim that during birth the bones of the head are so misplaced that the person can suffer from lifelong physical problems stemming from nerve miscommunications arising from the crooked brain. The chiropractor will adjust the bones of the head... not fiercly, just gently... and amazingly the brain begins to send the proper neurological message down the spine and to the body to repair whatever may be wrong. This method has only been around a few decades. Not exactly time tested like 5000 years of acupuncture. Google has some websites of practitioners who use this method. Some of their videos sound suspiciously like P.T. Barnum returned from the dead. Marji
Guest guest
I thought I'd post an update here and see if anyone has further ideas. I know that there is help to be had for me, but because my situation is unique, it's going to take a little digging and networking. On top of the things I shared in my original post, another practitioner has told me that she thinks I'm battling adrenal fatigue. Here's the rub. I'm not able to handle supplements, homeopathy, hands on therapies, or energetic healing, and the diets recommended for situations like this are comprised of foods I'm allergic to. It's a bit of a Catch 22. I truly feel there's help within reach... I just haven't found it yet. If anyone is willing to toss their hat in the ring and brainstorm, I'll welcome any thoughts. Guest guest
Hi Tom, I'm no healer or expert but the signs of adrenal fatigue and some of the other things that you are describing sound like B-Complex Deficiency Syndrome. I stumbled across this in a newsletter/special report from Dr. Bruce West's Health Alert Newsletter (I've gotten more help from this man's information than from ANYWHERE else before). The reason that I really honed in on this was because my wife was having health problems that could not be solved by cardiologists or neurologists and the slew of tests they ran nor the drugs that they tried on her. I'll go through this in steps; what was wrong with my wife, what B Complex Deficiency Syndrome (BCDS) is, and what we did to fix it. My wife was having headaches that had escalated into migraines. Then while driving down the road, her vision grayed out on her and luckily she had enough time to pull over before she wrecked. It took about 10-15 minutes for her vision to come back. Then she started falling down. Not losing consiousness, but she would lose all strength in her legs, her legs would give out, and she would just fall down (maybe similar to your issues with gravity?). She was getting bruises on her hands and knees from falling down many times a day. She went to a cardiologist who had her take a stress test (she fell off of the treadmill), EKG, tilt-table test, etc., coming back with nothing. He sent her to a neurologist who ran EEG's, scans of her brain and the blood vessels to her brain, and finally a 24 hour EEG showed mild seizures. The tried her on several drugs but all of them made her worse in some way. He didn't take her license away, but he told her not to drive until she was symptom-free for at least 6 months. (All in all, she didn't drive for about a year and a half). She also had chest pains during all of this. I started looking frantically for something to help her and I had gotten a subscription to Health Alert for Christmas and I was reading through the reports when I stumbled across BCDS. The symptoms include: weakness and fatigue (like the weakness in my wife's legs) indigestion (hypochlorhydria) poor appetite craving for sweets neuralgia and neuritis muscular soreness headache insomnia dizziness nervousness instability forgetfulness vague fears uneasiness rage hostility depression hostility anorexia muscular weakness exhaustion severe depression irritability anxiety and apprehension distraction morbid fears confusion dizziness nervousness mental confusion hypochondria acoustic hallucinations noise sensitivity impaired intellect rage She had many of these symptoms (and some I recognize from your post, like your problem with gravity sounds like a sudden onset of leg weakness like my wife was having,) so I put 2 and 2 together and we went from there. Dr. West says that a lot of this comes from the use of white flour products for various reasons such as the natural vitamins are stripped from them during processing and the synthetic vitamins they are enriched with, which I'm not going to go into detail unless you really want me to, LOL! Dr. West's recommendation is, of course, is to avoid all white flour products and products that are enriched with synthetic B vitamins (like breakfast cereals), but you can also become deficient from stress and various other things that suck up your B vitamins and stress your adrenals (alcohol consumption, stress, etc.). The B-50 and B-100 supplements from the health food store won't help because they are synthetic and unbalanced. He recommends a product from Standard Process called Cataplex B (natural source of B vitamins) and Drenamin (support for your adrenals) but my wife is a bit stubborn and I knew that she wouldn't try them. But Dr. West also mentioned that a great source of natural B vitamins is Brewer's Yeast and it contains all of the B vitamins except for B-12...if you want to add in B-12 you can take a dessicated liver tablet to fill in the B12. My wife used ONLY Brewer's Yeast, stopped all of her white flour consumption as well as most of her sugar intake and she stopped falling down within a day of doing all of this. You had mentioned that you are very sensitive and my wife is SUPER-sensitive as well. I take Brewer's Yeast throughout the day (probably over 10 a day and a liver tablet for good measure, LOL!) but my wife gets a little itchy taking ONE Brewer's Yeast tablet a day! Dr. West also addressed this in one of his newsletters. He said that if you can't take natural, whole food supplements like that, you might have to start with a VERY small dose and SLOWLY work your way up. Right now, she is taking 1/8 of a Brewer's Yeast tablet every couple of days, and it is working for her! I noticed that you said that you have emotional problems, which is another symptom of BCDS. When my wife takes Brewer's Yeast it's almost like she's on Prozac, LOL!!! Hopefully if you decide to try it, you will find some relief from at least some of your symptoms. I can't say that it will fix everything (or anything for that matter) but I see a lot of similarities between what my wife went through and what what you are going through now. And Brewer's Yeast is pretty cheap too...the last time I bought it at WalMart, it was under $3 for 250 tablets. I have been buying it online from Puritan's Pride and they have sales like buy one get one free, but right now they are having a buy 2 get 3 free sale, so Brewer's Yeast is $19.98 for buy 2 get 3 free (total of 5 bottles) of 500 tablets (like getting 10 bottles from WalMart)...even cheaper. But get one bottle first and see if they work for you. I would start at just one tablet a day and adjust from there. Keep us posted to let us know how you are doing. I have suggested Brewer's Yeast to people for migraines with a lot of positive feedback but only a few people have had symptoms as severe as my wife had. I really hope this helps you! Good Luck! Guest guest
Thanks for the reply. Adrenal fatigue is absolutely an issue, and the B-vitamin deficiencies are also problems for me. Here's where thigns get sticky, and why I'm researching so hard. I don't tolerate the foods people typically recommend for these problems, and I can't handle the supplements (including whole food products) that people generally lean on while dealing with things like this. There has to be help for me, but I don't know what it will look like. I'm hoping there's a single herb, a plant I haven't heard of before... a something I could tolerate that might help to calm my adrenals and power my system down so I'll digest better and start moving forward. I appreciate the continued dialogue with the members here, as I've already dealt with some of the best nutritionists and other holistic practitioners in the country. All of them came away frustrated saying that the things they would use are exactly what I cannot tolerate, so they ween' sure where to go... other than encouraging me to keep searching. Guest guest
Hi Tom, What reaction do you get from Brewer's Yeast? My wife gets itchy, especially on her scalp when she takes a full tablet at a time. She actually is taking 1/8 of a tablet at a time, once or twice a week to get around it...and it's helping her. My kids are real sensitive too (I guess they take after their mother, LOL!) and they had both had a reaction to vitamin D, so we stopped it for awhile and then restarted it, just once a week, and they seem to be doing OK. Me...I take supplements by the handful, LOL! If your reaction isn't too serious (like difficulty breathing or something like that) cut a tablet into quarters or even smaller and take one, once a week and see what happens. I don't want to sound like I'm pushing Brewer's Yeast on you, but your symptoms sound VERY familiar and I think that it may be of help to you. Very small dose at first, infrequent intervals and adjust as necessary. Good luck Tom...I hope you can get this problem licked soon! (Keep us posted!) She also had chest pains during all of this. > > > > I started looking frantically for something to help her and I had gotten a subscription to Health Alert for Christmas and I was reading through the reports when I stumbled across BCDS. The symptoms include: > > > > weakness and fatigue (like the weakness in my wife's legs) > > indigestion > > (hypochlorhydria) > > poor appetite > > craving for sweets > > neuralgia and neuritis > > muscular soreness > > headache > > insomnia > > dizziness > > nervousness > > instability > > forgetfulness > > vague fears > > uneasiness > > rage > > hostility > > depression > > hostility > > anorexia > > muscular weakness > > exhaustion > > severe depression > > irritability > > anxiety and > > apprehension > > distraction > > morbid fears > > confusion > > dizziness > > nervousness > > mental confusion > > hypochondria > > acoustic hallucinations > > noise sensitivity > > impaired intellect > > rage > > > > She had many of these symptoms (and some I recognize from your post, like your problem with gravity sounds like a sudden onset of leg weakness like my wife was having,) so I put 2 and 2 together and we went from there.
