checking prior discussions about Yerba Mate. I was in a raw foods store just yesterday and found a bag of

certified organic dried herb and something told me I needed it, so I bought it not having the faintest idea of what it was all about. Well after doing a bit of research on the net, it looks like exactly what I was looking for LOL Live plants used to call out to me like that in the woods, but this is the first time a package of dried herbs got my attention that way. OK so I'm weird, but it has always worked for me.

I am not a coffee drinker- in fact have avoided caffeine in any form since I have a familial tremor- so am proceeding cautiously to see if this is going to have an adverse effect on me. The other benefits ie gentle diuretic, appetite suppressant ( I suppose this is the caffeine), cleansing to the colon, relieve stress, calm allergies, fortify immune system, aid weight loss, stimulate mental alertness ( probably the caffeine again) energizing, and increase longevity were temptation enough to make me try it. I found a chart comparing caffeine levels of various substances and it seems the amount in the yerba mate is very minor compared to the rest so hopefully since my body has been devoid of the substance for a very long time- I just might get by with its use. Will let you know

and also report on whether the above claims are experienced by me.

Another question, someone suggested using unsugared cranberry concentrate- I found One source on the net that provides this in liquid form - the rest have it in pill form that also included hydrogenated oils, sugars, soy products, etc. so thats out. My question is, would the liquid concentrate be better than the dried cranberries that I get at our local Healthy store? ( Not going to call it a health food store because it carries non organic stuff as well, but its as close as we can get locally thats a full line grocery.

OK How can I improve the taste of the Yerba Mate without destroying its properties? Gads, I can chew feverfew and/or horehound leaves with no problem, but this stuff !!!!! Even with a bit of Stevia, its pretty bad. Or is my body simply telling me to stay off this stuff? Hmmmm.

Thanks for all your help

Well... I guess it's all a matter of 'taste and what you can get used to! I drink yerba mate with Teeccino (Java), cinnamon (or pumpkin pie spice mixture), a splash of almond milk and bit of stevia. I love it but - you're right it AIN'T for everyone! (Husband HATES it! But he's a 4-6 cup of coffee/day person so what do ya expect?!?!!) Dear Zoe , you could try making a decoction( boil then turn off and

steep overnight) with the dried cranberries..Also I think Knudsens

makes an unsugared cranberry concentrate..either way you will get some

natural occuring sugar.. if you can take feverfew and horehound ..this

stuff must be really something ..you could make a tincture and use it

in water.... Thats all I have on this as possible solutions..

Thanks, great ideas! For the meantime I added a wee bit of cinnamon and a touch of cloves, that has made all the difference in the world- I like adding the dried cranberries tho, will have to try that. LOL Yea I grew up with horehound and developed a taste for it quite young, the feverfew was more recent, but my migraines were so bad I really didn't mind it. Perhaps my problem this time was that there are no really dramatic discomforts or problems- Im just trying to fine tune and wasn't expecting it to be that bitter. This is the second day and still no effects from the caffeine- am also using the Certified Organic ACV - between the two I am getting the results I was hoping for and have discontinued all medications OTC and prescriptions. Once I feel this is all under control will be doing some serious cleansing. 3 lbs are missing!! in just 2 days hooray- happy side effect.
