for fruit flies, you must get rid of the source first (usually slime mold in a moist location.) then you can capture the remaining fruitflies with a funnel trap:

http://www.uky.edu/Ag/Entomology/entfacts/struct/ef621.htmthere's no need for pesticides. just use the trap shown on the site.we had a fruit fly problem and finally figured out that the source was a steam cleaner that hadn't been rinsed out after use. it took us several weeks to find the source, but after we did, they were gone pretty quickly.
