My experience-- - I was cruising google and hit a nasty it's called "Antivirus 2008" it looks like an antivirus program---and it just grabs on and wont let go performs a "system scan" and tells you you have 40- trojans so you got to got to pay 40 bucks right away or they will clear and or crash your harddrive. It looked kind of like my program so I even went and paid thinking they must have got dates mixed up---but even that didnt fix it. So then I realized that I'd been had so I cancelled my credit card right quick and went looking on google to see if anyone else had it. Sure enough tons of people. In the meantime the freaking thing hid itself in my puter--and though I found where it was hiding it wouldnt let me delete it. So I found this program called "Malwarebytes Antimalware" and it (the virus) let me through strangely (it also blocks you from websites and antivirus programs--so you can't get rid of it---but this one I could get through on) So I did a scan and thank god it quaranteened it.. And its FREE!!! So then I went to the recycle bin and deleted it. Been fine since. This one was a real nasty ---havent had anything get through my antivirus before. ************ ****** ************ ****** This from a friend: - "Steve><calls....>Friday, August 08, 2008 8:38 AMHow NOT to restore a virus on your computerI received this and thought I would send it on.-scHi,A few weeks ago I made a stupid mistake, clicked on a link in an email andwithout realising it downloaded 5 computer worms. When the virusW32/Sality.AH installed itself, I dont know.Anyway within a few hours, programmes wouldnt start, folders on my C: drivedisappeared. ...AND my Antivirus software was totally disabled, ALL myattempts to reinstall it didnt work.I make regular Backups of my C: Drive with Acronis, so I re-installed mybackup and for a few hours everything was OK againDuring this time, thinking I had gotten rid of it, I copied all my Data(Fotos Music etc) on my D: Drive onto a 500GB USB drive 'Just in case'.BUT then, within 24hrs the Computer got all the same symptoms again.Eventually I took the computer into the shop and had the whole systemre-installed.When I got it back with the new Antivirus working I checked my external USBDrive where I had backed up my Data and discovered the virus and the wormshad gotten onto the USB drive and already infected 211 different lots ofdata.....Turns out these worms SPREAD themselves via USB sticks & Drives. The Guy in the Computer shop gave me the following advice that might beuseful to you.1) Do regular backups of all important data (which I was doing)2) WHEN possible do NOT store the backups on the computer, if possibleBURN them onto a DVD (This stops viruses and worms infecting the backupsleft on your hard drives) THIS I was NOT doing and it led to my problem.3) TURN OFF your Windows SYSTEM RESTORE (see how to do this below)Apparently Worms & Viruses bury themselves into that directory and EVEN ifyour ANTIVIRUS is getting rid of them, everytime you bootup they keep beingREINSTALLED by System Restore.I GOT a virus that destroys antivirus Software.... so once its on yourmachine ONLY A FULL FORMAT & RE-INSTALLATION willget rid of it.According to the guy in the shop there is currently an escalating VIRUS WARgoing on in Internet Land...Professional Gangsters are hacking websites ,they are being hired by competitive businesses) destroying and infectingcomputers and encrypting data (which you have to BUY the Key to de-encryptit again etc etc) ....and its reaching epidemic proportions. ...Be MORE aware than I wasPaul *********ContentDisabling System RestoreWindows ME and XP utilize a restore utility that backs up selected filesautomatically to the C:\_Restore folder. This means that an infected filecould be stored there as a backup file, and VirusScan will be unable todelete these files.
