More bad news for statins: Possible Vytorin-cancer link

Which do you think is worse: high cholesterol or cancer? Seems like

an obvious answer, but I'm betting the thousands of people taking

statins have no idea that every time they pop a pill to try to lower

their cholesterol, they're increasing their risk of developing cancer.

According to an FDA statement about preliminary results from a recent

clinical trial, " A larger percentage of patients treated with Vytorin

were diagnosed with and died from all types of cancer, combined, when

compared to treatment with a placebo. "

This is not the first incidence of potentially deadly consequences

being linked to a statin- based drug. Pfizer recently put an abrupt

end to clinical trials for their latest cholesterol drug due to a

larger-than-expected number of deaths and cardiovascular events among

test subjects.

But I'm not so sure that the increased cancer risk is caused by the

statin itself. Yes, I still believe that statin drugs have dangerous

side effects, but this cancer link could be due to the fact that

Vytorin is doing its job too well.

Hear me out on this: the purpose of taking Vytorin is to lower your

LDL cholesterol. But the fact is, you NEED cholesterol to live - yes,

even LDL cholesterol.

Some doctors believe that the results of this Vytorin study say less

about a cancer-statin link, and more about a link between cancer and

low levels of LDL cholesterol. According to Dr. Daniel Steinberg,

professor of medicine at the University of California, San Diego,

studies show that " persons with the lowest LDL cholesterol show the

highest rate from cancer than those with higher LDL levels. "

What's more, Steinberg says many cancers can tend to reduce LDL

cholesterol levels - particularly cancers based in blood cells and the kidney.

It's all bad, if you ask me. Statin drugs represent a perfect storm

of medical misconception. Here are these wildly popular drugs, many

of which can have serious side effects. And yet, this is swept under

the rug because the health care community has whipped society into an

anti-cholesterol frenzy. And all the while, the notion that you need

to lower your cholesterol at all is flat out wrong.

But there's so much on the line - including the profits from the

world's most popular form of prescription drug, and the reputations

of the doctors who continually revise the guidelines for " healthy "

levels of cholesterol ever downward. So I don't know if this latest

news about Vytorin will have an impact.

I'll be sure to keep an eye on this story to see how the final

results of this study pan out at the end of this year. Stay tuned

Big win! Homeschooling legal again in California

This week, there was a big win for parental and individual rights in

- of all places - California. The state's Second District Court of

appeals reversed its decision from earlier this year that would have

made all home-schooled children in California truants in the eyes of the law.

This outrageous ruling said that the parents of 166,000 school-age

children were breaking the law because state law dictates that

children must be taught in full-time public or private schools, or by

tutors with educational credentials approved by the state. It

amounted to a de facto illegalization of homeschooling.

Thankfully, I wasn't the only one incensed by this unconstitutional

ruling by the activist judges of the Second District Court - the

protest from homeschooling advocates and local politicians was deafening.

As you'll recall, I predicted back in April that - and I quote - " the

only good thing about this ruling is that it is so wildly

unconstitutional that it's almost guaranteed to be kicked up to the

next highest court I'd be stunned if this ruling wasn't eventually

overturned at some level. "

As it turns out, the leftist activist judges - out of touch with

average Americans, as usual - stirred a real hornet's nest with this

one, and had to reverse themselves!
