Nerve Healing?

In 1985 I was involved in an experience which almost severed off my right hand at the wrist. It was an entrapment force of hundreds of pounds of 1/4 inch steel trapping my hand at the wrist between another 1/4 inch steel plate and doing extensive damage to the radius and ulna bones as well as severing arteries, nerves and tendons. Modern medicine was there to assist me in not only saving my hand but also in recovering almost 90% use back. This in itself was as everyone describes it, A Miracle!

This accident happened 23 years ago and for 23 years I have had only partial feeling in my right hand. Only my pinkie and ring finger had feeling..the rest was numb. Recently I have been getting more sensation to the hand..especially to the thumb. It seems as if the nerves are growing back. Is this possible? If so, why after so long? They did do surgery to connect the nerves back in 1986, and I guess that's why the pinkie and ring finger were normal to sensation.

I really am not sure if this is to be considered a blessing or a curse to have it return after so long, if this is the case. I have learned to cope with the hand as it was..and the abnormal hand was actually normal to me. Now it's like I may have to start out all over again getting used to the latest adjustment. I suppose one can liken it to an amputee getting back a limb..do you really wanna have that experience, if life is NORMAL and great anyways without it? My problem is that because I've been numb and have gotten used to it, it now tingles and pains and I'm not used to that. It's kind of a severe "pins and needles" Pain..like it feels if your limb 'goes to sleep', you know? That half dead, yet painful feeling. I'm no pain junkie..I hate pain and discomfort...LOL! So yeah I'm not sure if it's healing or what to expect and that kinda bugs me...any ideas as to what could be going on and as to what to possibly expect? There's a wise old saying that says "Be careful what you wish for, it may just come true". For many years I wished to have my hand normal and feeling..now I'm not so sure if it's a good idea at all. Any comments or input will be most appreciated.

Thanks,

Merlin.
