yoga and infertility

Hi everyone,

I'm having some trouble finding precise information on the effects of

yoga on deficiency type infertility. Most of what I find on the net

mentions " stress relief " or helping with endometriosis related

infertility but my patient is Yin/Yang deficiency type. She was

anovulatory and amenstrual for several years and her gynecologist

says she as a thin endometrium. She's been trying to conceive for 6

years. Through the use of acupuncture and herbal tonification, she

now has a BBT which reflects proper hormonal shifts for the last 2 or

3 months but still fails to fall pregnant. She is an Iyengar yoga

instructor and teaches 3 or 4 classes a week. She's not aware of any

contraindicated postures for implantation, only that she should " take

it easy and do restorative things " . Seems to me that postures which

help with labor and delivery would be contraindicated as well as back

bends or maybe all yoga. Another teacher I talked to says not to do

any yoga until the 13th week of pregnancy but I can't find an

authoritative source--which is what it will take to get this girl to

quit her jobs for a few months. Does anyone have experience with

deficiency type infertility, yoga, and implantation/first trimester

recommendations? Your help would be most appreciated!

Thanks, Shanna

iyengar yoga instructors have an excellent network among knowledgeable

practitioners. they have a rigorous certification process. as a 15y yogini

of the iyengar style, i would say she has the resources available to her to

answer this one reliably. i would put your mind at ease: this patient is

qualified to seek out her own answers on this issue.

though I can not point you in the direction of studies per se, I am a

yoga instructor as well and can say that inversions might not be a

good thing in this case, just as when menstruating or pregnant.

Iyengar generally does not follow this application, though most other

styles do. Kundalini Yoga would support her in a very positive way.

3HO does have a yoga research society and you or her might find some

valuable info there. I myself have never looked at it, but you might

find the link on their website (www.3ho.org)

point of clarification: iyengar does say no inversions while menstruating.

there are books on acupuncture and pregnancy. the one i'm thinking of may

be in the iyengar style. try toolsforyoga.com . there's a link to this on

my website (bottom of the resources page).
