Liz Liz, do you use guide tubes? If not, try them! I use single-use Hwato 30-guage needles (each with its own plastic guide- tube) as standard and usually have no problems with pain or resistance on insertion. For very sensitive or fearful cases, before tapping in the needle I press the guide-tube on the point as hard as he/she can tolerate for about 15 seconds. I then remove the guide-tube and insert the needle to the desired depth. Over >34 years using acupuncture, I had a few cases that could not tolerate needles at all - they developed needle-shock or fainting +/- rigors. I do not needle such cases after that, but use acupressure or point-friction +/- point massage with MOOV or Tiger Balm in subsequent sessions. Such patients usually are great responders to minimal point stimulation, IMO because their nervous systems are so finely tuned.
