Guest guest
Morning Lou: This is a very broad subject which I hope to do justice. By " balance " I meant the harmony of proper functioning, proper flow of qi and health. I usually approach this from a simplistic, analogous point of view, such as " warts are a sign of things going wrong, your system being out of balance. " I explain that most warts are caused by viruses which are opportunististic plants invading the body - a disease, if you will, analogous to a cold or flu. They would only manifest as " disease " if there were weakness or imbalance. By strengthening the body, TCM assists in the natural process of homeostasis (balance and harmony). My favorite analogy for TCM is that the body is a giant keyboard, with acupoints being both the keys and the monitor (or screen). As a Doctor, Acupuncturist, Healer, or whatever my job is to read the " emblems of disease " (I love this phrase) which your body shows me, like a fever and a cough when you have a cold, or warts on the hand. In fact, at each visit, my observation gives me a " snap shot " view of your entire constitution and health, but not only that, by monitoring the pulses, channels and acupoints, your body tells me how to help it get well. It's amazing, no!!? This is a great time to speak to one's philosophy of TCM or Qi or body energy and the immune system and how TCM can boost immunity, help one rid oneself of warts ( and a host of other things) and improve ones life. It goes on from there depending on the patient. Someone smarter than me suggested one " see the patient from where the patient is at " . I have used this advice continually in my dialog with patients. Sometimes too much talk about meridians and the magic of TCM just seems foreign and impossible to understand. I then try to bring it down to the patients experience level (this is when it's helpful to remember what they do for a living!). Most people have experience with colds and computers and understand something about viruses, so I use them quite often. Having suitable support materials, such as wall charts and phamplets help sometimes, but a concise, heart felt talk from one's healer goes a long way. It's also exciting and energizing to share your wisdom with people.
