Guest guest
HAPPY HOLIDAYS ONE AND ALL! I WISH YOU THE MOST BLESSED HEALTHY YEAR AHEAD EVER! I have to just say that this it by far the best list that I have ever been on. I have been using the recipes and brought my "home made" Total Tonic to work (that I got from the files and my mom helped me put together) We laughed as we did it thinking people surely were going to think we were making a witches brew, hahahahaha. Let me tell though you up here in Mass. we have had the nastiest flu run through here that just wouldn't leave. I am/was a team leader on 3rd shift and brought my homemade Total Tonic to work with me. I would give my team literally "shots" of it. I kept everyone working. Anyone that took my "brew" LOL stayed working and got better. I made up bottles to give to people that wanted it and included the recipe along with it so they could make it on their own. I love this list and love all the people behind it! YOU ARE ALL ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! My daughter and I are busy packing up to move to Arizona. A totally new adventure ahead for us and our 3 horses and Tigger cat that we will be bringing along with us! Where we are going, everyone there is so into herbs and oils and holistic medicine. I am so excited to go and learn more and share what I have learned from this list. Thank You Doc, Valerie and your wonderful Herbal Remedies family that has helped me so much. For a while there I was keeping them all quite busy on the phone there. Please let them know how much I appreciate everything YOU ALL have done for me for my family and friends! IN-JOY! *SMILE* Léonie It doesn't get any more beautiful, any more magical, any richer, or any easier, than things are right now. Until, of course, you start expecting it to. Guest guest
Gabriele, How about Gerard's Herbal? You can still find books of his in print as I own a copy. It has the name, Latin name, description, and what it was used for (during Gerard's time, and most are still used for same problems!). The pictures are pencil-style drawings. Another good resource is a book I bought in 1992 by Reader's Digest (published 1986) called "Magic and Medicine of Plants", which gives a brief history of herbal medicine, lists plants in alphabetical order with accompanying real pictures, habitat, range, identification, uses, what parts are traditionally used, and a brief history of said plant in herbal medicine. This book also gives local and common names of plant (example: Agrimony, Agrimonia eupatoria L. (Latin name), Church Steeples, Cocklebur, Philanthropos, Stickwort (nicknames or other names aka), Rose Family, Roseaceae). This is a great book for reference. This book also covers poisonous plants and identification, herbal gardens, and is a really nice read. It is available through Amazon and this is the link: http://www.amazon.com/Medicine-Plants-Editors-Readers-Digest/dp/0895772213 As for uses of herbs, one of my favorite books is "Herbally Yours" by Penny C. Royal. I have had a copy of this book for over 25 years and have used it extensively for infortmation on various herbs and their uses. The copy I own (the 5th edition) does not have many of the newer herbs from Asia or South America, but it is just an awesome reference book. When I had a miscarriage in 1986 and was trying to avoid a D & C (which I was scheduled for) I went to this book, took one of the herbs listed as I had it in my home from my last pregnancy, and passed material within 3 days, thus avoiding an unnecessary and potentially dangerous surgery, not to mention a big hole in our wallet as we didn't have insurance at the time! It cost me all of about .50c to heal myself of bleeding and complications from a miscarriage. It is a fantastic book. For the novice who would like to start identifying and getting used to herbs, the book "The Herbal Home remedy Book" by Joyce Wardwell is a good starter book. This book is put out by Storey Publishing and is a primer on 25 simples like dandelion, plantain, and black walnut. There are recipes for salves, lotions, and even cough drops. This is an interesting read and a good addition to any home library. One of its main contributions to my education was the small piece on the benefits of honey and how it heals up Herpes Simplex I & II since it is anti-viral, anti-bacterial, and anti-microbial. For about 15 years I have used plain, raw, locally harvested honey any time I feel a cold sore coming on and it gets rid of it pronto (within 1-4 days). I own over 40 herbals and supplement books, but these are good books to own. Some of the books I have aren't worth the paper their written on, others, such as the ones listed above, are great additions ot any home library. My other favorite book, which is not an herbal, is called "The Amish Home Remedy Book", put out by Abana press. Here is a link for Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Remedies-Amish-Country-Improved-Expanded/dp/0967070449/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8 & s=books & qid=1230301159 & sr=1-1 But, I will warn you~they want $10 for used books when you can buy these new from the publisher for $9.95 (Millersburg, Ohio). If interested, I can give the address. This is a fantastic addition to any home library and the very first book I head to anytime one of us gets sick or has a problem. I used it to heal my daughter's poison oak (lemon juice), my husband's kidney stones (beet juice), and bug bites (half an onion placed hard on bit eto pull out poison) just to name a few. These are some of my favorite books that I own and have found to be beneficial for my education in the world of herbs and home remedies, along with this site and a few other books and sites that I either own or belong to. But these are all ones I highly recommend. There is also a cool game on the market called "Wildcraft: An Herbal Adventure" that is marketed for people ages 4-104, it teaches the identification of 25 plants, their uses as food and medicine, all in a game format that is fun and easy to understand. We own this game and I have been teaching my kids herbs with this resource (actually, they are learning from the game!). I bought this game as a present for myself and my kids earlier this fall. I plan to not only use this with my kids and a neighbor kid (already used), but also with grandkids. You can google the name to find it. Hope this is helpful for you.
