Guest guest
Hi Everyone, I am new to this group and I am just starting to learn about alternative medicine. I am trying to learn all I can about herbs, essential oils and good nutrition. To give you a little backgroud, I have a soon to be 8 year old son who has had allergies (mostly food) and eczema since he was about a year and a half. We did the traditional medical route for 7 years. We started off avoiding known allergens although when they tested him, he was allergic to almost everything so we couldn't avoid everything. I started giving him antihistamines only as needed. I didn't want to put drugs in his body but the doctors told me these were safe and he would grow out of these allergies and eczema. After a year or two of trying to avoid triggers, we started giving him zyrtec everyday. I had steroids to use on the eczema. I refused to use protopic or elidel since these were new and there were some studies showing a link to lymphoma or leukemia. They also wanted him to use singulair and nasonex. I didn't use those on him for long. It seemed like they wanted to put him on all these drugs yet they didn't make much difference. In spite of all the drugs going into his body, he was still often rashy, itchy. His hands and feet always looked like he had poison. He was allergic to just as much or more. So, I thought, what do I have to lose. We've done this other route for 7 years, I'm going to see a naturopath. She immediately told me to stop giving him drugs. She detoxed him for the first 3 months and you would not believe the things that came out of his skin. It was scarey. Now, 9 months later, he is still not where he needs to be but I believe he is healthier. We are trying to nourish him now. He is on a better diet - very seldom does he drink juices or soda. It is mostly water. He has vegetables and protein at every meal. He still likes sweet things but I try not to give him too many processed foods. It's far from perfect but better. The naturopath has him on Vit D, calcium, EFA's, Figs and Flax, Broad Beans, etc. BUT, he is still not where he needs to be 9 months later. His skin is still dry and flakey.. He rubs it ALL the time. I don't know if it has become a habit, if he's stressed or if it is because it is still itchy because it is dry. My biggest concern is his hands. Because so much came out through his hands and feet, his hands look like he is 100 years old. I'm using YL essential oil Gentle Baby in an attempt to restore those hands. Will they ever get back to normal?????? or have I ruined him for life. Also, could he still be detoxing after 9 months? I read that when your body is healing, the bottom of the body is the last place for toxins to get out and his feet are still not even healed yet. I am sure they will be tough like his hands for a long time. Out of the bath, I use coconut oil mixed with manuka honey for a coat or two and then we use a product called psorzema by derma e. It is supposed to be all natural with healing ingredients. That on top of the coconut oil/honey leaves his skin feeling less tacky yet moister for a while longer. But, the next day, he is still very dry. What's is going on? Is it normal for this to take so long and is he really healthier? Why can't he stop rubbing his body? Sometimes I worry that something more serious is going on yet he was used to a drug that would take some of that discomfort/itchiness away so maybe his body is just trying to do what it has to do naturally until we get him back in balance. The naturopath also recommended EFT which we do occasionally. Would that really make a difference in the itching? I was gung ho at the beginning but I have had serious doubts throughout this process. In my heart, I know it is the healthier way to go but how long does he have to go through this? Sorry for such a long post the first time. I would appreciate any advice or encouragement. Thanks, Beverly
