Guest guest
Well this is interesting. I never knew chickens can eat mice?  What is the true diet of a chicken? I guess it depends on where they are located. Have any links on it, so I can read? I know I can google it, but there are so many websites I am sure, which is the best to be reading from though. We are thinking of one day having our own chickens. Thanks, Lisa There is a lot of ideology around food. Ironically people who are so anxious to be totally " pure " separate themselves more from Nature. The greatest insanity: eggs supposedly from " natural, vegan chickens " . Chickens will eat mice with great glee. A chicken can be natural or vegan, but not both. Guest guest
They are scavengers and scroungers. They eat a little of everything that is around. They will happily ALL the insects they can get their beaks on. In fact if you have free range chickens (truly free range) you have no more flea and tick problems on your pets. They also eat seeds and plants. The farm we go to for milk has free range chickens (as in pull in slowly so they can get out of your way) and I remember one time they apologized if the eggs were spicy because the chickens had eaten a huge horseradish plant. I have wondered about the " vegetarian chickens " because I know that a truly free range chicken is in no way vegetarian. I am hoping they are trying to say is that unlike commercial chicken/egg factories, the chickens are not fed their own wastes and dead. No wonder they worry about salmonella. My mother (grew up in the 30's) said that they had never heard of getting salmonella from raw eggs. Now the medical profession would have it that the people who lived close to nature were just ignorant of the nature of things. PLEASE! How much anecdotal evidence is necessary before it is proof? For them it is never enough. Ramona Quoting Lisa Fisher <malica98: > Well this is interesting. I never knew chickens can eat mice? What > is the true diet of a chicken? Guest guest
Hi Lisa, I have SEEN chicken eat mice. Mice love nesting in the fluffy hay that is used as bedding for the chickens. Occasionally they get too bold, and the chickens will catch them and eat them. This is good, because mice can transfer disease if they get out of hand. Chickens will scratch around, if they have the freedom, and eat insects, grass seeds as well as any greenery around. If you want to make chickens that are free but inside an enclosure ecstatically happy, dig up a bit of the packed earth and watch them go after the worms. After a long hiatus, when I got too tired of the heartbreak of losing birds to predators, I am getting ready to start a laying flock again, with heritage breeds. But first we have to re-build the enclosure, and before we can start on that the snow has to melt. Guest guest
Hi Lisa, Once, when I was pointing out a baby toad to my little boy, one of my chickens saw me and ran over and ate the poor toad right in front of us! I think they eat just about anything, even each other. Guest guest
A few years ago I was digging my vegetable plot over, I had some very funny and friendly chickens at the time and they where walking about with me, whilst I was digging they where following me up and devouring every snail, slug, grub , worm , EVERYTHING that moved, I was amazed how much they devoured, the down side is I cannot even look at an egg now, let alone eat one, I loved eggs before, but something clicked in my mind after that !! Yes chickens WILL eat anything that moves that is small enough and those chickens where great layers for it and very healthy, it took mr Fox to finish them off! Guest guest
Interesting how much commentary on poultry diet. Yes in the wild, they are omnivores. Having a chicken on a vegetarian diet is bad. But remember that birds in general have very robust digestive systems. Almost all birds will eat insects, etc. There may be those that don't, but they are those with systems specialized for eating seeds. On the other hand, you have buzzards that can eat pounds of pure botulism and process it so that it is neutralized. The world is a wonderful, balanced, buffered system. The so called 'cage free' eggs come from birds that are put out into a yard for a certain number of hours each day, but the yard is often concrete, so they can easily hose it down and disinfect it. So cage free, vegetarian eggs are just birds that are fed a commercial diet on concrete slabs. Kim Blessed Farm, WA
Guest guest
It is illegal to inject poultry with hormones in the USA, but don't worry, they found that feeding them arsenic laced feed has the same effect.
