Guest guest
Are you referring to the " Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004 " that went into effect January 1, 2006?Having numerous allergies myself as well as all my kids, and pretty much all my extended family... it's my understanding that the laws apply to only the " top eight " most common food allergens... and there are still some loopholes to watch for if you are allergic to one or more of these. ugh - we're more for fresh & local & raw and avoid commercially produced food items as much as possible - it's easier! ;-) TOP EIGHT MOST COMMON FOOD ALLERGENSMilk (dairy)EggsFish (e.g. bass, flounder, cod, etc)Crustacean Shellfish (e.g. crab, lobster, shellfish)Treenuts (e.g. almonds, walnuts, pecans) PeanutsWheat SoybeansSo, MSG never made that list - and yet it's found listed on food labels in many ways: Food starch, gelatinized starch, modified food starch, vegetable starch, hydrolyzed vegetable protein, textured vegetable protein, monosodium glutamate, MSG (of course) to name a few. One thing that MAY HELP as far as finding MSG " hidden " in a product is if it says it (may) contain WHEAT (listed in bold as possible allergen) and you don't see anything obviously a wheat component (e.g. wheat flour, wheat grain, whole grain, etc). Most MSG is made from wheat proteins, but not all, so it escapes being lumped in with WHEAT ALLERGENS on a technicality. Andee - novice herbalist, naturalist, and mom to many (all allergic to more than one food, combined, includes all top 8 and about 20 more!)On Mon, Feb 8, 2010 at 6:35 PM, Anella Russo <anellarusso wrote: If I understand you correctly an item can contain MSG but not list it on the ingredient list as MSG? Guest guest
As mentioned before MSG has other names, and it stands for Monosodium Glutamate. I do beleive it is listed in many if not all the processed foods, if MSG is in it in some form. I also tend to not feel so good after consuming something with MSG. I can feel weakened, sleepy, irratable, etc, Usually Asian restaurants do add it to there dishes and I think cafetaria food and were buffets are served, has it as well to keep them looking fresh. Guest guest
It is scary and for the most part very factual. The one thing he only briefly touched upon was the "Solution" to MSG toxicity. He mentioned it once and then breezed on by it. One needs to increase one's Magnesium intake in order to combat the effects of MSG. The is best done along with a cleansing program such as the Total Body Cleanse. Sometime over the next week, I'm also going to publish a list of Magnesium Rich Foods. All the best, Doc On 2/11/2010 11:11 AM, JohnP wrote: Don't know what happened.
